Umm... no, that's rather the point! It is a pleasantly easy test to take. "Do I know what this word means? Yes or No?"

I believe they've taken some care to post words that are unlikely to be confused with other words of a different meaning.

I love that they've done the test so that it should work for people of any age from 3 up.

Well that was a cool test indeed. My estimate came out at 34,200, which seems acceptable for my age of 57 based on the average for a native [American] speaker. The correlation with SAT scores (yes I still recall those after all these years

) was also remarkably accurate. In my defense I did much, much better on the mathematics half of the SAT, and all my education post high school was in science/math/engineering.

This reminds me of a conversation I still recall from graduate school of the various sizes of vocabularies of various types we all have:

vocabulary reading > > vocabulary writing > vocabulary listening >> vocabulary comfort speaking.

... which does not surprise me. My English is very technical (because work) and enough to not being beaten to death if wife is arguing about something. By the way, she's american, lol

English is my second language, Spanish my native one. Living in continental USA since 2007.

Do you usually speak English or Spanish at home with your wife? That's quite a low number for someone who's spent four years in an English speaking country, according to the charts on the blog page.

Of course, it's about 7290 more than I have of Spanish vocabulary...

English, all the time. All my SQL and computer books are in English too.

I barely speak spanish here in Texas, believe it or not. Most people at work don't speak Spanish, and most of my peers are in Europe and ASIA, so no Spanish with them. Wife does not speak Spanish.

I don't even watch latin channels, don't like them,lol. But hey, I can communicate properly using a second language, read, write, etc ;-)

I wonder how that app. works or calculate that.

Many of the words I've have only encountered because I subscribe to a "dictionary word of the day" email. Most of the exotic words I have not read in a book or newspaper.

I should probably feel satisfied since Englis is not my native language and I do not live in an English-speaking country.

Anyway, always seeking to increase my vocabulary in English, and of course the other foreign languages I (try to) speak.
