My Samsung netbook cost half the price of an iPad last year and is most definitely a real computer. In fact I like the whisper-quietness of it so much that when I'm working at home I hook it up to my keyboard, mouse and widescreen monitor and use it in preference to the stonking great i7 monster sitting under my desk.

I'm running the full suite of Office 2010 on it, including Access.

No, I've been reading about it.

They are $299 this weekend, and I am going to get one next time there is a sale.

I almost decided to buy myself 10.1 Galaxy Tab for $225 just for reading using the Kindle app and reading PDF's.

I just can't stand reading on a 16:x device.

Agreed. They're selling netbooks nowadays at the lowest for a round ~$230, which is less than half. Tablets are expensive compared to real computers. If tablets were around $200, then I'd consider them cheap compared to computers of the same screen size.

The problem with those netbooks is that they have really lousy screens and they are incredibly slow.

I really don't find this in practice.

Yes the screen is only 1024x600, but it's bright and clear. I can use this for hours on end (last Saturday I used it all day for a project at a friend's house). I was no more fatigued than if I'd used a tablet all day.

I can use MS Office apps, including Access, perfectly acceptably on my Samsung N130, which is running XP.

When I hook it up to my widescreen monitor it runs those applications and drives a resolution of 1920 x 1080 completely acceptably.

Slow for high-end gaming maybe, but not slow for work as 'a real computer'.

Define "real computer"

I think tablets are not for content creation work, like working on documents, connecting via ssh to other machines (although you can) writing hundreds of emails every day, etc. But they are better for web browsing, showing reports, video, entertainment. With great portability and battery life.

So at this point I agree with you that for content creation tablets are not the right product, but if you want a good and fast netbook that you can use on the go for daily work, they cost the same or more than a tablet at this moment.

Hmm ...

I went ahead and bought one. I am installing new firmware upgrade, etc. But the Kindle app. does not provide a full landscape mode, I'm really sad!

I know that's not a deal breaker for most people, but means that if you want to expand the book's width rotating or using landscape , you can't, Kindle will split or divide the page in two.

I like the keyboard tough ... and even when heavier, is more comfortable on my hands thanks to the rounder edges.

Looks like it's permanent now:

HP execs told us they would stop at nothing to be #2 in the tablet space, and this last weekend the company offered some deep discounts on its flagship HP TouchPad to get the ball rolling. If you missed the $100 discount, though, don’t fret — HP’s Stephen DiFranco just made that deal permanent.

$399 is still too expensive. Drop it to $299.
