I don't think there is a hardware problem, it's just it's very easy to get IM corrupt, but not as easy to fix it. (I get it frequrently during development, since I have to change "Sony cached" files on IM). I normally do 2 restarts with format or checkdisk with my 300/505. Connected to USB during boot, so that reader UI doesn't start / scan IM.

The root of the failing installs is most likely 1.2.00.18050 firmware. (I don't remember, if we had that before)

Recommended way to install PRS+ on 505 is to "downgrade" to US version using standard sony updater (you can find it renamed to "Uninstaller" on the project site) that installs 1.1. 0.18040.

REMEMBER to save dumps from failed PRS+ installs, so that you could revert back to 1.2.00.18050, if you won't like PRS+.

I just did a google search on the firmware 1.2.00.18050 installed in the 505. This is a UK only firmware and does not seem to be available for download. I cannot yet replace it with the standard US firmware. I guess because the device thinks it is older (I have tried).

Therefore, if the firmware is corrupt I will have to find a way to replace the UK firmware with US firmware.

Try this link.
Was already mentioned some post above too.

Plus do the CHKDSK thing (assuming you are on a Win-Box).
To do so, press reset, connect reader to USB and power up.
Device will show up as external drive in explorer.
right click, properties, extras Checkdisk (not sure what are the exakt terms in UK Windows, as I'm using a german localised one) check now and tick the correct errors box, afterwards shutdown or reset your PRS-505 and redo this.

Thanks Mark. I have done a CHKDSK scan and there are no problems. I have also repeatedly copied and deleted large files to the IM without any issues or problems. So there is no hardware fault with the IM.

I used the link and successfully installed the new firmware. To test it I formatted the IM and it worked. Later I will try again with the PRS+

I have installed PRS+, mirabile dictu!

Changing the firmware was what was needed. As soon as this was done, the upgrade to PRS+ worked without a problem.

So, if anyone else gets an "invalid type" error, reflash the firmware.

A big thanks to everyone but especially Mark Nord for all the help and advice.
