I like the case because it makes the Kindle very easy to handle and I can just throw on the bed or couch when I'm done reading.

However, I'm wondering if I should have just bought the SquareTrade coverage for it. They sell a 3-year extended warranty which also covers drops and water
spill damage. It costs $39.99 but they have 30%-off codes all the time, making
it $27.99. Not bad for 3 years. (not to mention that it's only $3 more than my
$25 Kindle case Does anybody have experience dealing with SquarTrade's
claim process? Do they try to get out of paying claims if your Kindle is accidentally
dropped and damaged?

I much prefer to read on my kindle without a cover. But I nearly always use my K3 with it in my m-edge case, as I take it with me everywhere. Only when I am at home do I use it without any cover.

I love my K2 naked. I use my M-Edge cover only when I'm not reading, or when I read at night with my eLuminator2.
And anyway my daughter hates vegetables

But you can drop your reader just as easily while reading as you can while not reading. In fact, because when you are reading, you are holding your reader more then when you are not. So actually, the chances of a drop while reading without a cover is greater.

Do you really want to put your reader at greater risk of damage.

You said it - "risk of" - not "certain"... some people (like you) may be risk averse, others (like Wordcrasher) willing to take that risk on the basis that the risk in their eyes is small.

IMHO, it would be insane not to have something to protect it when you're not reading, but as for reading without a case, probably OK. Just keep your head on straight and don't punt it off the couch while you're sitting there.
The sleeve may be OK while you travel, but I dare you to take your K3 out of the sleeve and use it on the subway.

I have read of people reading in bed, falling asleep and finding the reader on the floor. Do you want to do that with a naked K3? You may say to yourself it's fine to go naked if I don't do this, that, or the other thing. But there is no way you can be 100% sure you won't do something that will cause your k3 to hit a hard surface.

a coverless eink reader is a really STUPID idea.
I'm quite happy with the form factor of the Kindle all on its own. I do read it on the subway every day, if I get bumped/shoved it's either going to end up on the floor or the tracks, and if it's in the tracks the case isn't going to do a whole lot of good anyway. I'll keep taking my chances, I acknowledge that it's risky and there's nothing I can do to be certain that I won't drop it, but that's OK with me.

I've been reading mine naked since the k3 came out. I have a slip case, but almost never remember to take it with me. If it's in my bag I put it in a pocket on it's own, otherwise it's jacket pocket, back trouser pocket or naked in my hand. It has one small scratch on the screen from the button on my work trousers, but other than that the only marks on the case are from when I opened it up to put the screws back in that had shaken loose.

Haven't broken it in the last 9 months, and TBH if I do break it, I'll just buy a new one and probably keep that naked anyways.

You can read it naked indoor, no pets, no kids, and make sure you're careful not to drop it. Whenever you bring it out, or stuff it in the backpack, or there are animals, children... please use a sleeve/cover/whatever.

P.S.: Screen protector? For not getting scratches?

I am thinking about buying Kindle and I am not sure if I am willing to pay additional 25-30 $ for a case (if it there cheaper maybe). For me the only danger would be to drop it then not reading. If you can fall asleep reading, you should find a different book to read. Good books usually keeps me awake not sleepy.

I think I would be willing to pay extra for 2 years extra warranty as stuff tends to not work properly around me (not because of physical damage, dropping).

Why do you need us to give permission by the way?

If you are comfortable with taking the risk, however small, or dropping/scratching/lying on/sitting on your Kindle then go for it. You'll find the gibbering cowards will say nay, and the devil may darers will say go for it........do what you want is my advice.

Good grief! To hear some people on this thread talk you'd think a Kindle is made of porcelain. I've got a K3 that I've had since Christmas of last year. I have an EcoNique hemp book-style cover that I use when I travel, as I tend to keep it in my laptop bag and fully expect power cables, serial and comms cables, and plugs of various sorts (of which there are probably over a dozen varieties in my bag at any one time) to put the screen at risk of damage.

That being said, I nearly always read my Kindle naked as it's a more pleasurable experience for me. I leave it lying about the house naked, and I've got a 3-year old daughter. But you know what, she tends to leave it alone. She's been taught. And when she does pick it up, it doesn't get banged about like a hammer...she just looks at it. I don't have a heart attack...I simply remind her that she doesn't touch that...and she puts it back down.

I know that we must protect our investments. I know that electronic devices are particularly fiddly. But really, people...I'd hate to be in your shoes. I'd be a nervous wreck.

At the end of the day, it's just "stuff". Stuff can be replaced.

"I have read of people reading in bed, falling asleep and finding the reader on the floor. Do you want to do that with a naked K3?"

arr.. im a bit late to this thread, just been reading through I am with abookreaderon this one, not rich.. far from it but heh, early on I figured to use kindle like I want to just resigned myself to having to replace it if worst happens. I am an insomniac and reading helps me to sleep (plus meds ) so my caseless / naked kindle has been in bed every single night for 8 months. It has fallen out of me bed a few times.. actually have a pillow on floor beside bed now just incase, lol. That being said, they are pretty rugged wee machines, although it kinda depends on what kind of surface you drop it on. For example say ceramic tiled floor = bad, buy a heavy duty case; wooden floor = best not to drop it; nice carpeted floor with rubber underlay.. meh

The only solution I could think of to make my kindle sleep proof was custom design something outa gorilla glass , at the end of the day though I figured I would just leave it as is, still looks like a new kindle strangely . The only problem I have had was I somehow managed to half dismantle it in my sleep one night, lol.. luckily the case pops back together again good as new as for a case that would protect kindle in backpack from everything.. personally thinking on just 2 plates of steel with some form of rubber shockproof foam / rubber material for the inside would prolly still be cheaper than most brands.. and actually protect kindle :P

I don't have a cover for my Kindle quite yet, but I'm not planning on using it outside of the house without a cover.

I'd have a cover outside the house, or anytime it's not sitting stationary. If you keep it on your bedstand - sure. If you take it out and about with you? Cover up!

I do not have a cover for my K2. Bought it way before the K3 came out and it has never seen a cover. I have it with me almost at all times. It lives in my backpack in its own pocket or travels between clothes.

Needless to say I use it without cover, too.

Yes, you can see that it is not new, some small scratches on the backside. The front and the screen are as good as new.

Please, by all means get a cover if you can't hold on to it while reading.

But since it fits in the back or leg pocket of most my trousers I don't see the need for a cover. And while reading I just hold on to it. It has been working out for me.

Cover or No Cover would depend on how easily you could replace the Kindle if it breaks. My kids bought me an Amazon Cover (no light) for my Birthday Kindle. I rather like having a cover . It makes me feel more relaxed about placing it on a table where someone might put something on it or drip tea over it.

For travelling, I've just bought a toiletry bag from Superdrug for under £4 which is big enough to hold the Kindle in its cover but small enough to fit into my handbag. It'll keep off damp in a downpour and stop handbag gunge getting into it.
