What you mean Window's partitions, you mean virtual boxes? I am not new into virtualization, I've used VMware and VirtualBox, but I just downloaded Parallels yesterday. I do need to run an XP virtual machine for my PlayOn service.

Hmmm, maybe I should wait before upgrading the Mini. I did not care for the Mac Air, not running any critical stuff there, but the Mini is now my "combat" machine.

unboggling,
there is actually a recovery partition installed on your mac with Lion.

Hopefully I never have to find out if it works, but I also made a bootable USB drive from my Lion install, just in case:

Oh, I actually first used Boot Camp, Apple's actual Windows on a partition solution, which was basically running Windows from a Windows partition,as if my Macbook was a Windows notebook.

Then I moved to Parallels, using the Boot Camp partition, but running Windows applications while still in OSX-which is more the virtualization approach.

I have not used Boot Camp ... need to read/investigate about it.

What are the advantages of using that instead of Parallels and creating a regular virtual machine, speed, better I/O maybe?

jocampo,
using Boot Camp is basically using the Mac (mini in your case) as a full fledged Windows machine-full speed, no compromises at all, and no compatibilities. The disadvantage of course, is you have to re-boot into it to switch OSes, unlike virtualization. Parallels was doing pretty well speedwise lately, though, so not sure what real-world advantages people are getting either way.

A couple of my co-workers use MacbookPros and run Windows on Boot Camp full time-they aren't that interested in OS X, but love the MBP hardware.

(and to bring things back to Lion-apparently for the first time you can legally run multiple copies of OSX on one machine-nice for those interested in virtualization)

kjk, thanks. I didn't know about the recovery partition (and forgot about making bootable ext drives). I guess I didn't read far enough into the Lion documentation.

Even when logged in on an admin account or deleting files you own? That would be a problem for me.

I've been running Lion since its release, and I'm not being prompted for credentials when I delete files (and I just emptied the trash to check that, too) Not sure what rcuadro's seeing, but it's not standard behavior.

I've had no problems with parallels, or calibre (the other essential app) We've installed Lion on 3 machines and had one conflict, which we've since resolved. Pretty happy, here, we even like natural scrolling.

@tlrowley, thanks!

@all, thanks in general for responding. I'll go ahead and upgrade.

rcuadro,
I don't have this issue, but a quick perusal of the Apple Discussions forum shows that some others have run into this as well.

Not sure what would cause it-dodgy permissions being set after the upgrade?

Definitely not a feature

You have to save it before you install because it conveniently deletes itself after the install

If you paid for for your MB Air you can install it on your mini for free... up to 5 computers as long as they are on the same iTunes account. I upgraded my iMac, MB Pro, and my sister's MB with out having to pay again. I also saved the download from the app store should I needed in the future. CNET had a video on how to burn the image to a thumb drive (Or DVD) to save yourself the expense.

@rcuadro, solution from following kjk's link, apparently it works in Lion too because Lion users are reporting success.

That die it for me, I had 10 GB of stuf "hidden" in the trash can that I deleted.
Follow all the instructions given by Mr. Retrofire and all ist back to normal. My Trashcan works again and the anoying message for password is gone!

QUOTE =======

This works on Snow Leopard and Leopard, and perhaps on Lion:

1. Quit the "Terminal" application and relaunch it, to make sure that you are NOT logged in as another user (root for example). This is important, because the folder we create will get all the permissions from the parent folder (your "home" folder), and only the user who created the new ".Trash" directory (you) will be able to use it without restrictions.

2. In the Terminal type

sudo rm -frv ~/.Trash

to remove the old ".Trash" directory and all folders and files in the old ".Trash" directory.

3. In the Terminal type

mkdir -v ~/.Trash

to create a new ".Trash" directory in your "home" folder!

4. In the Terminal type

osascript -e 'tell application "Finder" to quit'

then

osascript -e 'tell application "Finder" to activate'

to restart the Finder!

5. Done! You can now move files in the trash!

If the Finder restart does not work on your system, then logout/login to activate the new trash can.

Also, I had a similar trash problem in Snow Leopard 10.6.8 the other day resulting from a software update, after that deleted files didn't show up in the trash. The fix for that was to reset Access Control Lists (ACLs) for home folder using Snow Leopard install disk inserted, shut down, startup holding c key, at language dialog go to menu and reset ACLs. The problem in Lion is possibly related to that.
