can anyone give an example of the 8th number affecting a conversion please ?
Calibre uses the fourth value in the Font size key as the default value.

I don't think any values in the key are ignored, from the chart:

normalized scaling factor:

1 = 60% - 3:5
2 = 75% - 3:4
3 = 89% - 8:9
4 = 100% - 1:1
5 = 120% - 6:5
6 = 150% - 3:2
7 = 200% - 2:1
8 = 300% - 3:1

This is as much into the weeds as I care to get. I don't recall the details anymore. Experiment and let us know it this corresponds to calibre use.

Good Luck.

ok - i think i get it.

if a source uses only the 7 step the xx-small to xx-large range, then only 7 values will be used, but if the source has 8 distinct font sizes, then all 8 key values may apply.

as for book with 9 or more font sizes - that is probably too rare to worry about

@cybmole,

Any book with very large dropcaps is likely to use the "8th value" when converted to epub and probably azw3.
