I think that the article might be misleading.

With 50% of potential buyers opting for iPad, it seems suspicious that Apple is missing from the other graph.

And what else did Amazon manufacture beside the kindle? As these would be the first tablets made by Amazon isn't it strange that 55% of the total number of people would buy a tablet from Amazon (that graph doesn't have any mention of excluding someone)? Isn't it possible that most of those who said that they would buy from Amazon were thinking of it as a vendor and not a manufacturer?

I think the first survey was specifically about Android products, which is why the iPad was left out.

I wouldn't call it strange. It's just showing that people are willing to buy an Amazon-branded tablet.

I think you might be right - they might have been thinking "if I can buy this tablet from Amazon" rather than "Amazon is/will make a tablet that I can buy."

Look at the top of the graph where it says "Which of these <eph mine>Manufactures would you seriously consider buying a tablet from"

The study has made it clear, they know Apple dominates the tablet market, what they are trying to find out is what other vender has enough branding to compete against Apple. That graph then only lists competing vendor.

The list is not exclusive to Android it includes WebOS and Qnx tablets

It would have been made clear in the question.

I don't know about anything else manufactured by Amazon except the kindles. I don't think that 55% of the people who answered the question have dealt with Amazon as a manufacturer, but I think that they dealt with it as a retailer, and misunderstood the question.

And the best way to do that is to put the competing vendors in a graph next to Apple. Since the numbers weren't excluding the ones who aren't interested in buying a tablet, and since from the other graph we see that at most 69% would be willing to buy a tablet from Apple this year, the numbers should be comparable.

And Amazon sticks out by the simple fact that it's not selling a tablet yet.

I have found that I prefer buying affordable items, but I prefer having un-affordable ones. Not sure why.

I'm getting so fed up waiting for someone to release some decent software on the Android Market. Everything is free or priced at a couple of dollars, and it really is indicative of the quality.

Look at the vast range of professional level music apps on iOS: you can use the iPad as a quite good sounding guitar amp or effects peddle, turn it into a fully-functioning Tenuri-on (saving a second purchase of 500 dollars), or a fully modelled Korg analogue keyboard.

Search for music production apps on Android and you get four 'keyboards' which aren't laid out in any usable format and make silly noises.

Even if Amazon release decent hardware at an even better price-point than Apple, it won't make any difference if apps for the serious user continue to (not) come at the same rate as they have so far on the Android Market.

No mention of the Asus Transformer, which seems to be selling well. I am seriously considering buying one of these as I think it overcomes some of the current tablet shortcomings like lack of SD card and extra battery time, as well as faster typing input. I haven't bought an IPad because of these shortcomings, especially as they are fairly expensive. The Asus isn't a whole lot cheaper, but it seems to do more of what I will need.

Who the what now?

I'm extremely happy with the quality of my 100 free-or-less-than-$5 Android apps. Now, I grant you, I'm not using my phone as a music player because ZOMG BATTERY DRAIN, but what I DO use it for (reading, games, internet browsing, note taking, email, etc.) I'm perfectly happy with. And my NC tablet meets those needs very nicely, too.

I'm always amused when people equate "free" with "sucky". Some of the best apps I've used are free. Some of the worst ones were paid apps. Funny how that can work.

Totally agree.

Perfect cases in point - computer security [ Avast, Malwarebytes, Spyware Warriors, etc..], photo editing, zipware, Calibre [!], Google [ at the moment!] ,and so on...
All top quality, as good as - and, as tested by "Which" - or better than, paid-for stuff.
The premise that if it hasnt cost money it can't be good is ridiculous/wierd snobbery/wrong.
In my particular section of antiques, customers have on occassion decided not to take a particular item - which was perfect and exactly what they asked for - because it seemed too cheap.
I have always obliged with a more appropriate article to suit their taste........

I think Richey79 was referring to pro/semi-pro music production tools - korg keyboard etc not apps for listening to music...

I'd be tempted, too...
...but it would need at least two more features than current Kindle apps to keep me from hacking it; a dual column landscape mode and installable truetype fonts.

As is, the only thing keeping me away from the Nooks is the screen size; I want something like 8-9 in. With minimal bezel. About the size and weight of a thin hardcover.

Price matters, but I would not buy something that is too heavy for its size. For a tablet that we will be using mainly as a reader (because that's what we are talking about here, right?), that's extremely important, in my opinion.

Take the example of the new HP tablet: has an awesome operating system, but besides lacking of enough applications for its size , at least at this point, it is kind of bulky when compared against similar ones, like iPad.

The Nook Color is another example. Has a very competitive price, but it is bulky when you compared against similar devices, like Samsung Galaxy.

I prefer to pay more, if the weight is also the right one, for the size. Then I look for the features that will provide out of the box.
