I will probably buy one (or even an older 500 model) for my SO if there's a deal for about $100. Can't justify $300 for it, but hopefullythere will be a close-out or SonyStyle special or something soon...

I will also wait until Gen3 and Kindle are out, and then start putting some money aside...

I really want one, but mainly because it's "new and shiny." I just got my 500 model working perfectly, so a bit pricey to upgrade because it looks a little different. I'm also tempted because the new one seems to work better with a Mac.

But I've put this much time into figuring out my 500 I guess I'll stick with it. Maybe. Probably. Um, wait I DO have a Christmas bonus on the way from my job. Hmmm...

I just put it on my Sony Credit account. It's a must have for me. Disk Mode, Viziplex screen, The fact that it will be upgradeable to the Adobe Reader software and the redesigned navigation is exactly what I wanted... For me it's a no brainer a must have.

Pass!My prs500 is pretty adequate for what I do with it. No need for a step up.

But if I change ladder, I want colo(u)r and input. I want to write my book on one, and if I don't need a computer to manage my library the better.

Had a depressing thought yesterday. I have time to read a book in 1 1/2 to 2 weeks. With what's left in my life, that makes roughly 875 books and I have much, much more than that. I need to make choices.

If the screen is noticeable brighter I will buy it. I really like my PRS-500 enough that I am no longer tempted by the Cybook. My one complaint is that the screen isn't bright enough. The contrast needs to improve. If that improves with the 505, I will buy one.

What I really want is a front-lighted reader though. Someday.....

Glad I'm not the only one who's had this horribly depressing thought. But, consider that you may have more time to spare in your retirement....

I think it's about time for Sony, Gen3, Kindle, and whichever other ebook reader to consider the price issue. With more competition and higher quality products, the prices should definitely go down to attract new buyers, or for people who already own one to upgrade. I have a Sony 500, and I don't think I would spend more than $200 for a new one.

Another vote for "let's wait for the Kindle and the Cybook first."

Mainly because as DRM systems go mobi seems the lesser of two evils.
But there is one thing I have to admit. Sony sure knows how to design great hardware.

(the problem is the later ruin it with their soft...)

The obstacle there is that until the production costs on e-ink go down, Sony et. al. can barely buy just the display panels for $200. I don't think we are likely to see anyone selling these as a loss-leader unless they're confident they can make it up in book sales, which they're evidently not.

That's not *exactly* the case. For a major manufacturer - such as Sony - it would be possible for them to get the 6" display for closer to $120-$125 per display, as long as they're capable of ordering in quantities of 10,000 or more per order. Or so I think I remember from when we were talking to PVI. Then toss in the cost of the SBC, the case, the display controller board - yep, that's separate from the display - and other items like the on-board charging adapter if there is one, the packaging, the USB cable, etc. - and you're looking at about $200-$225 per device at that quantity - and that's *THEIR* cost. Of course, being able to order in quantities of 50,000 or more drops those costs down. but then you have to add in the MSRP markup... Given 100,000 quantity orders, I rough-guesstimate the PRS-505 probably runs them $150/unit out-the-door. And they're probably wholesaling them to the retailers for $225. But Sony's not going to sell the readers for less than what they expect the retailers to charge or they'd grab all the sales from the retailers.

Was walking by the SonyStyle store, gave up, went in and ended up buying one... I'm pretty horrible that way

The screen is better, and much much faster in page turning. I like the new look, but am kinda worried about the SD/MS slots on top, they aren't really covered up by anything, and I fear an impact could turn the cards into projectiles.

The reader feels more solid, they went for a more "flat" design I suppose, instead of the curves on the older one, and I think I kinda like the new one. A large reason for going with Sony for this is that the reader is metal, and feels good in the hand. Also having a place to attach a wrist-strap makes me feel much better about toting the thing everywhere.

I *LOVE* having collections on the card. All of my books are in collections now. They already made things easier with the alphabetical "jump to letter span" but with collections, I no longer have to scroll through 15+ pages to find what I want to read.

Other issue: you are much more likely to press the button keys by accident, but since this just brings up the "jump to page" dialog, it's not as bad (you can cancel it with the menu button).

Best part so far? Collections, collections, collections. Oh, and the screen. But collections!

Wonderful! Just what I wanted to hear from a buyer who already has a 500. Thank you. Any chance you could post a photo of the two side by side displaying the same ebook? I think many of us are quite interested in just how improved the display clarity is.
