Librarians like the Nook because it currently will do epubs which libraries have in abundance through Adobe Digital Editions. The Kindle won't have this until the end of the year. The nook touch is WiFi only so be aware that your sample may not have that available. Also is has less contrast on the screen but unless you compare it to a Kindle, it shouldn't be an issue. I had a regular nook for a year until I tried the Kindle and dumped it like a hot potato for a number of reasons, but I don't think your kids will care about most of them. The password issue is significant and it could solve some of your problems, as long as it doesn't lock out anything you want them to get and given the pressure you are getting from the administration, it is not worth any hassle. Either one will do what you want.
Be aware, you can download what would have been considered pornography just a few years back, on either devices for free from Amazon or B&N. Just be prepared. |

Well, We've done the deed and bought the nooks today (so I won't be posting here anymore except to reply to any loose ends). At least on the nook I *can* set a password that disallows them from buying books but still allows them to use the device. (And, I guess, download samples of stuff they shouldn't get at. We plan to have a contract that they agree not to do that, then if they do they've broken that contract. From what I read, the policy and having them sign it is the key.) The school (district and principal) wants me to do the acquisition anyway, and then we just turn their wifi on briefly and download any new books for their group. It's a somewhat different way of thinking about things than with the Kindle, but I think I can make it work. The local B&N folks are very supportive.
Thanks again everyone for your input, and allowing me to crash here while I was still considering the Kindle. In the end, hopefully either will be fine for the kids. C |
