If you haven't modified the Goodreads metadata plugin then you won't get Espionage. I shared my modified Goodreads mapping for the plugin here.

But It looks like it is time to review my mapped tags for Goodreads. Last time I updated them espionage was under Thriller > Espionage, now it is under Spy Thriller > Espionage.

I've just modified the Goodreads metadata with your json file and can see the right mappings in the plugin config.

But I've just tried getting metadata for Daniel Silva's "Portrait of a Spy", which at the Goodreads site is tagged as Espionage - one of the first entries - and I still only get: Thriller, Mystery.

I think Goodreads is returning only 2 or 3 tags.

Mapping Spy Thriller > Espionage to Espionage gets you the Espionage tag.

Tags are updated in the ePub upon export using:

Save to disk
Send to device
Content Server

and the tags in calibre's internal copy are only updated via conversion.

There is a Modify ePub Plugin that is being developed that in its current state should update the metadata of calibre's internal epub without doing a conversion.

Update: I see you said jacket, the plugin will allow you to remove a jacket, then you can use it to insert a fresh jacket. Two step process I believe.

I've been using this plugin for quite some time. Mostly to get rid of embedded fonts, but checking the option "Add/Replace metadata jacket" updates the tags in the jacket.

I'd rather use this instead of a conversion. My guess is that this plugin doesn't alter the epub as a conversion would - sometimes it could have ill effects.
