You are most definitely encroaching on "this is not what a Kindle is for" territory.

How exactly does that help me accomplish this?

I too would like to have a Kindle app for e-mail. Don't listen too much to those who say that "this is not what Kindle is intended for". Because Kindle as a hardware and software kernel is perfectly capable for this task. It even has a web browser.
The only problem is that there is no adequate software or service that is optimized for Kindle e-ink screen. However, e-ink is not a disadvantage, it is actually a reason why some would like to read e-mail on it. |

Gmail's mobile application at http://m.gmail.com should work in the browser. What I do is to create a list of my most common web applications, and then I send it to my Kindle using my Kindle email address. That way I don't have to type in the web address each time, and the passwords are often stored for an extended period too. Here are my favorite mobile apps:
mobile.nytimes.com mobile.twitter.com m.facebook.com mobile.lemonde.fr mobile.economist.com m.verizon.net |

I mean that you're asking for stuff that I can't think of anyway the Kindle could do, and would probably drain the battery really fast if it did. You'd have to prevent it from going to sleep, keep wireless on all the time, and have it update the eInk display regularity each time you get any email, which, if you're suggesting a scheduled push interval is inadequate, sounds like it would be quite often, bringing a weeks-long battery life down to hours-long.
Not to mention the amount of 3G data transfer you'd be incurring (if you're using 3G), which may or may not be a flag to Amazon of abuse. As an experiment, it's interesting. As a practical matter, you might want to consider some outside the box ideas, like having the instant notifications sent as SMS messages to a cell phone, alerting you to pull the mail. If saving the typing is the only reason you're doing that, the Kindle does have bookmarks.
Sending the document is extra work, but a good way to keep them on your home page, or to include extra info with the links. |

Even m.gmail.com is rather hard to navigate. I see no technical barriers for a simple email app on Kindle. Amazon had plans for app developers but they haven't very far probably due to 3G data pricing issues. Data limits is not a problem for WiFi connection but it would be hard for Amazon to separate 3G from WiFi. I do not expect any commercial email app soon but I really would like to have one.

I too would really like some kind of *IMAP* client. Maybe Mutt or Pine could be used.
In any case one could install the Debian image to solve the problem. A 'native' application would be nice, though. |

actually, the problem about kindle isnt the screen (resolution) or the keypad (typing).... its the 5-pad controller.
It takes too many clicking to get to a specified link (say 5th column). Its good that it has a "smart" way of detecting hyperlink (or some kind of that stuff), but it is still hard to navigate through the screen. Though, I would have to admit that the reading email app looks rather appealing... |

Auto checking push-like email would be very handy to avoid email checking addiction when abroad
