[QUOTE=Ransom;1646580]I feel the same way. What the fuss is about Tolkien I'll never understand. In fact, even most of his closest friends in the "Inklings" didn't care for it. They took turns reading from their work at their meetings, and once when Tolkien began to read, Hugo Dyson yelled, "Not another f***ing Elf!" Thenafter, Tolkien's stories were banned from the meetings for a time.

QUOTE] Ha ha! That's hilarious - exactly how I feel about them! Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't "get" Tolkien!

I've just seen that Dawn French has written a novel. Going to see if it's available on Kindle. Should be good, I'd imagine.

A manga I'd recommend is "Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei (English Translation Of Title: "Goodbye, Mr. Despair") - The Power of Negative Thinking" by Koji Kumeta. It's a very funny series about an extremely depressed teacher of a class of very unusual students, each with his/her own quirks. As two examples, one student can only communicate with others via text messaging, and another student with thinning hair has so little presence that people literally can't see him even when he's standing in front of them (at the most they might hear a voice from somewhere) unless his bald spot is exposed. I've read six volumes so far (and have the seventh on order), and I haven't been disappointed with any of them.

Janet Evanovitch - Stepahanie Plum, is pretty funny although it could be classified as chick-lit

Tim Dorsey - Serge Storms, is also amusing with a bit of gruesome stuck in there to keep you awake. Other authors I find to be witty or amusing are Harlen Coben - Myron Bolitar, Glenn Cook - Garret PI, Robert B. Parker - Spenser, Margery Allingham-Campion, Dorothy Sayers -Wimsey, Rex Stout-Nero Wolf, Dennis Lehane - Various, Liz Williams-Inspector Chen, Lawrence Sanders-Archie McNally Helen |

The Simon Pegg autobiography is hilarious too. It's a mix of real life stories as well as a fictional alter-ego of him.

But I love Simon Pegg anyway, so I realise it's not everyone's cup of tea! |
