You don't need Python installed separately, it's bundled with libprs500

You did? When? The closest I could find was a comment you made on Aug. 18 (not to me) that lit2lrf works with drag-n-drop. And I wasn't even considering converting lit files at the time, so I'm sure that thread wasn't addressed to me.

Nevertheless, this seems like something even I might be able to do successfully (none of my command-line attempts ever worked!), so I'll give it a shot!

DrMoze, give me a link to one of the free Baen books you want converted and I'll post the command line to do it.

The surprising thing to me about this is not that such mixups happen, but that they happen so rarely around here! I certainly have a hard time keeping everyone straight!

I double-checked earlier posts just to make sure that I wasn't confusing *myself* with someone else!

Anyway, I did try the drag-and-drop approach using lit2lrf and it seems to work like a charm. : Yay! All I need is *one* conversion procedure that works, and this is fine for me. (I gave up on conversions for a while when I got a bunch of books on my Reader and have just spent time *reading* for a while! )

BTW, I didn't have to create and move a keys.txt file, as in Nate's earlier post. I just did a fresh install of the latest libprs500 package, and dragged/dropped onto lit2lrf. (I assume the program was modified more recently to handle this. That is one heavily evolving package!)

Thanks to all the info posted. And I am impressed by the libprs500 package, as it does a great job converting, and drag-and-drop is about as simple as it gets for using it. (Apart from having to open up the main application folder to retrieve the processed lrf files...)

Now I have a handful of Baen titles to check out on my reading list.

But when you do the drag/drop method, do you get the proper metadata like author and book title? Can you set the margins to what you want? Can you set the header to be on if you want? That method just gives you whatever the default is and that is not always what you might want.

As a sample of how to do it with the command line...

Code:
lit2lrf --right-margin=3 --left-margin=3 --header --font-delta=.5 -a "Aaron Allston" -t "Doc Sidhe" "Doc Sidhe.lit"
The URL to this book is http://www.webscription.net/p-110-doc-sidhe.aspx. When I downloaded it, I changed the name so it meant something.

The key file is only required for DRM-protected LIT files. Baen books don't have DRM, hence no need for a key file.

The author and book title show up just fine in the listings. Margins are fine--I don't mind slightly wide margins or narrow ones. These tend to be narrow using the DnD method. The end product is a very readable book with no hassle, and cover art and ToC to boot. I'm not too fussy with formatting, and this works just fine for me.

I have a query in to the chap responsible for the ebooks at Baen, but as noted, he's in the middle of rolling out a replacement for their forum software, so I don't expect a quick response.
I got a respnse back from Arnold:

subject RE: Baen Free Library in Sony Reader format
mailed-by webwrights.com

I'm torn. I'd like to add the Sony format, put just doing the free library
doesn't do much. If I do it for the Free library I will get endless
questions about why not the full WebScriptions catalogue. That's 640 some
books to convert.

As to posting on Mobileread I'd have to clear it with Toni.
I told him I understood the issue, and asked if he could run it past Toni when time permitted.

Is there a good scripted solution that would let him automate the conversion of all of the existing Webscriptions stuff?

I believe that Fictionwise is using HTML2lrf (part of kovidgoyal's libprs500 package) to automate conversion of some 16k titles. Perhaps you could suggest that to him, since you've got him talking.

Details here and here.

I'm sure any number of folks around here who use it could offer a command line that he could plug into the thing to do the conversion quickly and easily.

Good show following through with the gent.
