Touch Easier Shelving

no, it's better, it's interface has a lot more screen real estate to work with plus seeing an actual shelf space.

can't speak for the Nook STR but if it's using the same UI as the Nook color, it sort of does list an unshelved section. Though I know it's not what you guys want it does serve well with existing shelves.

For example on my "Mystery/Thiller" shelf when I touch "Edit" your library list appears and every title that is already shelved on my Mystery/Thiller has a check mark in the box next to it. So you know what is and what is not shelved on that particular Shelf.

I dont see this, or a great number of other, proprietary systems being open to the extent that your work in Calibre is going to equal shelving on your device. And I am at peace with that.

I just pull up my Calibre and take my cue from that. I tend to shelve only the books I know i'm going to want to reread and and the books I haven't read yet. And when I have some down time, that's when I like to play around and just go through and add other book as I go along.

But I'm a play around junkie, I love going into my den and just fiddle with my Media Monkey for my digital music collection and Calibre for my books and I bring in my nook . I enjoy that time so I"m like you, I'm at peace with it.

I'm referring to day one of the NOOK Classic's release. Weren't sideloaded books treated as second class citizens? It didn't display sideloaded book covers in the color LCD, sideloaded books not part of main library. This aversion continued with the NOOKcolor originally not allowing sideloaded books on the home screen. Now with the Touch you're forced to look at ads on the home screen for their books.

They don't intend to support metadata. At this stage, it's obvious. That's a sideloaded book thing to them. Also, they don't really like the library books thing. Doesn't even display how many days until book expires. The Sony does.

No, it displayed their book covers just not in the "Cover Flow" section that was only found in the "BN Library'.
But when you pulled up your sideloaded book, the cover is and always was shown in the little color lcd stirp when you opened up your book.

On the Nookcolor, it did address that request and now you can put sideloaded books on the main cover and the library is totally intergrated together. The later has been there since day one on the nook color.

on the STR I like the top half of the home page alot, the secon half would be fine if I was into the social thing and I can see that as being fun for those who are. But for me I would like to be able to customize the second half to my liking, I would make it my "on deck circle" .

If you don't have NOOK Friends then you should be able to put some books there for easy retrieval. OR, BETTER YET, your Wishlist.

Last time I was using a Kindle, it didn't even have collections. (I had the K1 and wasn't too happy with it.) After that, I used Bookeen Opus where you can create multi-level folders to drag and drop your book files. It wasn't a "shelves" concept; but showed the folder structure of how you stored your files. I used the Opus for 2 years. I just switched to the Nook Simple Touch over the weekend. I like that Nook has a dictionary for the ePub, which Opus doesn't have. And since Nook can do the same drag and drop concept storing at the multi-level folder structure (through SD card), I'm happy with it.

I'm not sure if the K3 has a collections concept since I stopped looking into amazon readers after the K1.

I know from personal experience that the K3 can do collections. I think a firmware update enables the K2 to do collections as well. You can create them manually on your device. People have also written small programs and calibre plug-ins to manage collections via your computer as well. With my Sony ereaders, I create collections in the Sony software and sync them just like my iPod and playlists, or many people use calibre tags since Sony can create collections from metadata. My frustration with the B&N shelves is that it is so cumbersome to set them up if you have hundreds of books like I do so I can understand the OP's complaints. Many people with the NC have had issues with books on the SD card disappearing from their shelves, especially if you ever have to do a reset. The best suggestion I've read so far is to store your books in folders and navigate to them through My Files. But, if you like to browse through covers rather than lists (like I prefer), then this option is disappointing. I think that B&N really needs to implement collections/shelves via tags or folders or some other method to make the process easier.

I know, and it's a shame. Having the option to shelve by series/genre would be a killer feature. B&N have gone a step in the right direction by mixing downloaded with sideloaded content, but they still have a long way to go. I understand that they are in the business of selling books and the nook family is a means towards that goal, but they can't continue skimping on features or they'll be left in the dust.

Re-plugging the USB-cable to the PC and ejecting the device again brought all the books back (and right into their shelves, too).
Annoying, but no real biggie.

The Kindle 3 stocks its shelves (or collections) the same way nook does plus doing it in the reverse direction, that is, you can open the properties of an individual book and choose <Add to Collection> whereupon it offers you a list of all your collections. You check off all you want it in. Most people have a lot more books than collections so the process is faster.
