I have to disagree. As the person you quoted stated, leeching life from the Kindle battery will require you to charge more often. I want to say that as an added plus, you don't have to carry the light everywhere around with you. I only use the light in bed, so I leave it in my room.

As for it being a hassle, if you don't want to go through this, you could probably just use normal batteries for less than a dollar a month (current Amazon price per AA battery is 42 cents each). However, it's hardly a hassle. A single AA battery lasts me at least two weeks before it starts to noticeably dim. When the battery wears out, I can just pop it in the charger, and put the spare battery in the light.

It doesn't drain the battery too bad but it does shine in my husband's eyes when reading in bed so I use the Travel Flex instead.

For what it's worth, I am very happy with the performance of my Kandle II.

As for the batteries, I have used it for almost 10 hours on the same batteries but, wary of what others have said, I bought a job lot on eBay (known make and with over a year's date) which worked out at around 10p a battery.

@Blossom: Nice! What do you think of it? Me, I think it is a steal and the build/light quality is quite good for such a cheap thing...

The only time I use the lighted cover is when I travel or when I actually need the light. If I'm reading in the light, I take off the cover and use the Kindle naked.

I'm glad you like your light. But for me, I prefer the lighted cover.

Well I had mine over a year and I love it! I've gone through maybe 3 packs of batteries in the year I had it. It takes 1 AAA and they last a long time. I do leave it by my bed and use it to see around with. It clips right onto the case and unlike the Xtraflex 2 the neck has not worn out at all. It's super lightweight and well made and I will buy another one if this one ever breaks. It lights your ereader with even lighting. No spots or glare. It's not ereader specific so you can use it with any case or even a Paperback. I originally bought it for my Pocket Pro before I got my K3.

My husband has the Mighty Bright XtraFlex 2 which I bought first and didn't like how heavy it was or how it as bright as a headlight. lol He uses it as his night light and book light.

I would love to find a light to attach without the case but I can't see paying $30 for one.

For the record, I did a post on some of the most popular lights (at the time) here:

In that case, I can't argue with you. Most people tend to use the lighted cover as, well, a cover. Your idea is great if you like to read without any sort of safeguard, but I care about my Kindle too much to not put any sort of protection on it.

I use the lighted cover for an hour or so each night.... I would say that I recharge the Kindle about every ten days. Personally, I think the battery life is extremely good. I have to recharge my Sony about as often, and it doesn't have a light draining its battery.

Looks like as with many things, it depends on how you use it. If you have ready access to batteries, then I'm sure there are several reading lights that are superior.. If you are on the go a lot, then the lighted cover may be a better answer.

I travel a lot internationally and have had the issue of trying to find batteries in remote locations. No thanks. The lighted cover is worth its weight in gold. One less thing to remember to pack.

cheers

Or you could pack 5xAA batteries, and be good for the entire trip, even if you're a heavy night time reader. (Assuming your reading light is any good). It's true though; having one less thing to pack (and take out during airport security) is great when traveling.

I recommend investing in some eneloop batteries because they're just like normal batteries, except they're rechargeable. I don't have to say how great they are; just look at the Amazon reviews (more like testimonials)

^ +1. I have been using Eneloops and other similar stuff for a few years. Excellent on the go power for all my portable gear using this:

And much lighter than carrying round a supply of batteries, which is a major consideration when travelling. Also, it's much cheaper in the long run, as batteries are sooo expensive these days.

A lighted cover is a no-brainer IMO.
