You could also ty the formatting utility from the SD organization.

This is unlikely to be a problem with the SD card. Not only does the one I purchased work fine in my computer, but another card I tried (the 8GB SDHC) also did not work. Since the only card of the three that did work was the 256MB SD, I think the reader is failing to recognise SDHC cards. There are two possible explanations for this - 1) the hardware is broken or 2) the firmware is broken. It's possible that this became corrupted in some way when installing the update (I note that it comes with a warning not to do this until fully charged and yet, like others above, mine wouldn't charge from a wall socket and it began updating as soon as I plugged it into my computer). Hence why I wanted to try and reinstall the firmware before sending my device back for repair/replace. |

Sorry that the 'Format Memory' didn't work.
As has already been mentioned, the card MUST be formatted as FAT32, but unfortunately, it's even more complicated . . . Firstly, Fat32 can support a variety of cluster sizes, and some devices will ONLY work with a particular cluster size, and some SD cards will ONLY support their maximum capacity at a particular cluster size (which may not be the one the Sony needs). Also, just like a hard drive, SD cards may be partitioned in various different ways, and most portable devices are also very particular about how an SD card must be partitioned. So, I hate to be a pessimist, but I wouldn't be very surprised to hear in several weeks that you swapped your Sony with another and STILL can't read those SDHC cards that you have been having trouble with. If your 32GB card does not support the cluster size that the Sony expects, that would explain the 'card not supported' message, so did you also try reformatting the 8GB card? I would try reformatting that 8GB card in the Sony itself, and if that doesn't work, try formatting it to various standard cluster sizes in a PC, starting with 2048. I mention this because I just had some very weird problems with one of my 8GB SDHC cards in Linux (the Sony internally also uses Linux) - Every time I wrote to it using my Linux Netbook, the files were visible until the card was ejected and re-inserted, then there was nothing on the card. I reformatted the card in Windows 7, wrote a few test files to it, and now it is working perfectly, in Windows, in Linux on my Netbook, and in my PRS-650 Sony reader. I know it seems like you shouldn't have to deal with these kinds of issues, but sadly, as some others have already confirmed in this thread, all too often YOU DO, especially with SDHC cards. I have never had problems with my 2GB SanDisk SD cards, but have run into problems with a few cheap no-name SD and SDHC cards. Hope this helps. Last edited by delphin; 07-09-2011 at 06:47 AM. |
