We may be talking at cross-purposes. I am using the word "tags" as it's generically used in computing - as a set of attributes that can be "attached" to a file. In that generic sense, collections are tags as opposed to, say, folders (which they are often confused with, and which they are definitively not). We're not disagreeing

You two are sort of talking about different things. I use Calibre to set the metadata for a book, including tags. When Calibre sends that book to the Sony, it creates a collection for each tag of that book.
So suppose I send two Patterson books to the Sony. Don't Blink is tagged with "Murder-Mystery" and "Suspense." 1st to Die is tagged with "Murder-Mystery" and "Woman Detective." On the Sony, I would have a Collection called "Murder-Mystery" that contains both books, as well as a Collection for "Suspense" and one called "Woman Detective." There is only one copy of each book on the reader, even though each one appears in two Collections. The reader database keeps track of where the book is actually located on the reader. The advantage is that I can have a book appear in lots of different places, but no matter where I select it, it starts where I left it and has all of the notes, bookmarks, etc. that I made. The disadvantage is that I can't narrow my search to only see Patterson books that match Suspense. |

All though I still disagree. ![]() To me, folders and collections are the same thing. Now if your talking about directories, I may agree. ![]() |

In the terminology that is conventionally used, a folder is a directory; a collection is a tag. You're just going to confuse people if you start saying that the Sony supports folders - it doesn't.

I personally don't think of tags as "collections". I view tags as tags. I may be able to view something based on them, or filter something based on them, but I don't think of them as "collections". I guess it's just me. FWIW, I'm a little bit behind on the latest computer terminologies. |

I am not familiar with the other ebooks, but the Sony does allow you to sort the books within a collection. So a series will show up in series order.
Using Calibre you can create series like collection for ANY reason you want. I use that to make collection by author, but withit the author the books are sorted into series, with each series in order. I also have added SubSeries, so the forementioned Caves of Stell is Series "Robot" and SubSeries "Elijah Baley" and also ordered in Genre "sciFi" and within Author "Asimov, Isaac" I use a custom series l;ike column for Author as the default for the collecion based on the Authors names in the meta=data is alphabetical. |
