Wow. I thought this was a joke at first and cruised the site looking for clues that it was satire.

Do the books have little illustrations in the corner that move when you flip the pages? Maybe they should. Maybe that's what will make them real Kindle Killers. And if that doesn't do it, imbed scratch-and-sniff patches on some of the pages. And if that doesn't work...hm, I'm running out of killer ideas.

I was *so* not going to post this, but with another ebook vs. DTB thread, it fits in. Love some of the comments.

That metafilter page... *head explodes*

I usually like metafilter convos, but that was a shock going from Mobile Reads to there.

You can't read eBooks in the shower!
Amazon/B&N/Kobo alters the book content while you sleep!
You have no way of knowing how much is left in the current chapter!

I kind of wanted to tell them that if you've never used an eReader before, you probably shouldn't post about them, but I lost my soul about halfway down the page and gave up.

Agreed. This new book will soon fade into oblivion.

Because fragile paper books that cost substantially more than ebooks are going to be what knocks the Kindle out of market dominance.

MetaFilter is a site I visit *at least* once a day. Most of the time the conversations are intelligent, thoughtful, and informative. This one is indeed *head explodes*.... And the funny thing is that some of most unintelligent remarks are from folks that I'd always admired for their sensibility. What is it about DTBs that turns some people into Luddites? Maybe that much loved book odor is a mind-bending drug...

never mind costing more than ebooks... they plan to charge an extra couple of quid/euros for these over the regular paperback price

ps
just had a look at that metafilter link
Couldn't stop reading the comments as soon as i read the one saying he can read his book in the shower (!) but what about these newfangled ereaders, eh?

I think it's a combination of Get Off My Lawn and New Technology is Evil.

(How many of us eReaders hated eBooks until, you know, we caved in and bought one? I'd guess a fair percentage. )

My fav quote was:

Quote:
It also makes me blind with rage that people who obviously read very little are going to drive books out of existence. If you think a Kindle is even remotely close to a replacement for a book, you can't have actually read more than 10 real physical books ever.
It combines all the heady bouquet of self-righteous faux intellectualism with a spicy undercurrent of persecution complex.

I've come to the conclusion the user DU is trolling. Do a search through the thread and his comments are one outrageous statement after another, including the reading books in the shower and the above quoted comment about not reading more than 10 books. If he is, it's one of the best trolls I've seen on MetaFilter in a long time.

Hmm. You may be right -- every post of his is basically a flounce, but he always comes back. 'Course, who HASN'T done that once or twice, but still.
