Then I fell in love with the "Pocketbook concept": the very user friendly interface, the customizability, and starting to envy all the users of the 5'' Pocketbook 360, which has a mature" firmware and is full of cool features (how can anyone not love the sheeps theme interface) - couple that with the fact that a 9.7'' is not the most portable of devices, while the 360 fits any pocket, I just had to have it. And indeed it travels with me absolutely everywhere, very handy for short business trips, too. But for longer periods (and on my desk, and in general at home), the PB903 is king. |

No, it doesn't. It's the area that matters, and a 9.7" screen has 2.6x the area of a 6" screen, thus allowing you to see a lot more text at once.

I have Nook (6" screen) and Sony 950 (7" screen). Both nice readers, but I totally prefer the Sony because of the larger screen and better book organization. Fewer page turns, more text, it just involves me more in the reading experience. It is also lighter in weight than the Nook, so more comfortable that way as well. And the touchscreen and battery life of the Sony is just superior to the Nook1E's LCD touchscreen/e-ink combo.
Do I still use the Nook? Yes. It can be handy sometimes to have one book open on Nook and another open on Sony for ease of switching between books. It also gives me a reader to use on those occasions that I have to give the Sony a charge. Or if I'm going some place where I don't feel like risking carrying the more expensive and harder to find Sony. The original Nook also will do better in the kitchen or poolside in a ZipLoc baggie. And I use it to receive/read a lot of free BN.com books. That is probably it's primary use at the moment. My serious reading is mostly done on the Sony now. I like having both... two readers gives a nice, secure feeling... if one went down or were broken, I'd still have access to all my ebooks. |

I have a kindle 3, Sony PRS-300 and an iPhone. Since getting my K3 last year I don't use my Sony anymore. I prefer doing my main reading on my kindle because the screen has a much better contrast ratio than my Sony (pearl e-ink) and it has more features. Plus the extra inch on the Kindle screen makes all the difference. I sometimes read on my iPhone if I don't have my kindle with me or it's more conveniant due to it's size, or I'm doing sneaky reading! But mainly I use my kindle.

I have a Sony PRS-505 and an EZReader Pocket Pro; I used to read on a Clie PDA; my daughter has a Kindle & my husband has a Sony 300. Haven't changed the standard firmware on anything.
I want a 5" screen version of the 505. (And I don't mean a 300 or 350. I like the memory card, and I don't want a touchscreen.) The Sonys have the best PDF support; I much prefer the 5" screen's portability; I like the navigation options on the Sony better than the Pocket Pro, which is annoying because I do really like the "recently opened" category, and I like folder groupings but I also like being able to see all by title or author; the Pocket Pro only shows filename listings, not metadata. PocketPro's support for everything not ePub is mediocre. The .mobi files get the tops of letters chopped off in italics, and the page counts are wrong. (I regularly see a ~20% over-estimate of number of pages; a book will tell me it's 630 pages long, and I'll get to page 548, and the next page is 630. Also, paging to the end and then moving backwards doesn't work; the way pages are calculated requires starting at the beginning.) The support for RTF, HTML & TXT formats is pathetic; it adds line breaks in the middles of words, including one-syllable words. However, the sizing for ePub and reflowed PDF is good; lots of size options. PDF reflow is as good or better than the PRS, and the sizing is better. The buttons seem less responsive; I often have to push the next-page button twice to get it to work. And I think the battery meter is basically useless. I love the Kindle's web browser, but not enough to give up ePub support or deal with the larger device. Can't speak for actual filetype support; haven't looked at it that much. I miss the extreme portability of the Clie, but not the short battery life. I'd prefer a backlit screen if they lasted longer; I can't wait for solar-powered ebook readers. (Hey, basic calculators used to be expensive, too.) E-ink, especially, ought to be low enough drain for a solar cell to work for power. All of them theoretically offer MP3 support; I've yet to bother trying it. |

To clarify my criticism, i'm an apple fanboy and i really like the ipad but not for reading. By the way the iphone4 is the much better choice for books because of the great display. |

My mistake. I should have pointed out that I was referring to area. Someone may have mistaken my comment to mean that the display was thicker. One shouldn't assume.

My first reader was a Palm Teo, then I switched to several iterations of Windows Mobile PDAs and phones. Then I got a PRS 505, followed by a JetBook.
Then along came the wonderful world of Android with apps for all the reader formats, and I’ve had a couple of Android phones, the latest being a 4.3” HTC EVO 4G. I found myself reading pretty much exclusively on that until I got a 7” Samsung Galaxy Tab. THAT’S my reader now, I haven’t used any other since getting the SGT. It’s small enough to fit in my front trousers pocket, and large enough to read comfortably without too many page turns. My only issue with it is the battery won’t make it through an all day read, but then If I can devote a whole day to just reading, I can plug the lil beastie in, and it’s all good! |

My first ereader was the Boox 60 and thought it was great that I could actually use a font size I could see. The screen was pretty bad though - dark grey letters on a light grey screen is difficult. The software was pretty buggy too. The other big problem was that I actually injured my thumb on it! The buttons needed a lot of pressure to work. It does have a touch screen but you need to use a pen and it hurt my thumb to even hold that.
Then I got my Sony 950 and to me it has the best of everything - easy to use touch screen, easy to use dictionary, great contrast, bigger screen, lighter weight. When I have to use the buttons it doesn't take a lot of pressure. I can even make the contrast better using the Adjust View function. Expensive, but worth every penny. Then I recently got the K3 3G and I am glad I didn't have to pay for it - it was free thru a credit card offer. Every time I picked it up I was turning pages because that's where I normally hold my Sony. At least those buttons are easy to push, all the other buttons take too much pressure. The menus are also weird - I couldn't find things because on some menu screens you have to hit menu again to get more options. If this had been my second reader I probably would like it better, but the Sony spoiled me. I do like the font on the kindle better and I can also get rid of margins and change justification by a simple file edit - I have to convert my epubs to do that for the Sony. I also occasionally read on my Motorola Atrix phone - it's good for in bed because it's backlit, but I still have to turn the brightness all the way down even in night mode. So the Sony is my choice for primary reading and I have the K3 in case anything happens to the Sony. |

I've got a sony prs-505 and a Pocketbook 902. At home, I only use the Pocketbook. Although both screens are vizplex, I find the Pocketbook's clearer, maybe because it's bigger. I love that I can change the font on the fly without hacking or flashing the device - this has become my top must-have on a reader. Also, the Pockebook can read lots of formats, so I can buy almost any book and don't have the hassle of converting. It reads most pdfs pretty well, this is handy as I get a lot of them at work.
My prs-505 is my on the move device. It's small, light and very pretty. Plus, it has lots of buttons, and I love buttons, so much more convenient than a joystick. Incise: why are all the manufacturers so afraid of buttons? Even if touch screens become the norm, I'd like to have the choice to press or touch ![]() |

I went from a Nook Classic for almost a year to the new Nook touch.
I ran a Nook color on rooted stock for months before moving to CM7 on it in January. I can read on the NC but I really prefer e-ink. I must say I love the new Nook touch. I wish I could turn off the touch screen page turning sometimes though (or at least make it use swiping) - I get accidental page turns sometimes when I get sidetracked by the kids or whatever. I've had a little hands on with my wife's Kindle 2 and Kindle 3 - they seem like nice machines also (but I prefer epub / memory card slot/ etc). My wife's ipad is WAAAY to big for me for reading, but it's great for pdf. My Nook Color does pdf pretty well but it's a bit small for it sometimes. |

Bebook, Sony 505, Kobo 1
I started off with a BeBook 1, mostly because of the price. Then I got the 505 on close-out sale, and finally, in a bout of patriotic fervour (plus it was only $149) I got the first Kobo as soon as it came out. Somewhere along the line I picked up a blue PocketPro EZReader; not affectionately known as the Wrinkled Blue PEZ. Eventually, I got the updated BeBook 2010, and that is now my preferred reader. I like the ergonomics of the Hanlin readers, the little flipper on the right side of the PEZ is its best feature. The big plus for me, that all the Hanlins share, is outstanding sleeping battery life. I never have to turn them off, they will sleep for a month or more if I get distracted, and I can pick them up and start reading where I left off. Both the Sony and the Kobo must be turned off for there batteries to survive being ignored; the Kobo now will do that automatically, the Sony requires a sequence of menu choices to get there. It seems like every time i want to use the Sony I have to recharge it first.
My major problem with the Kobo is that I hold the reader with my left hand, which means that I have to reach up with my right to squeeze the page turn button, and it is stiffer than I like. The Sony has a similar problem, although I can reach the lower left page button with my thumb. So the BeBook 2010 is my reader of choice because of its speed, reading area, ergonomics and outstanding battery life. |

To be honest, I prefer my readers backlit. Livig in Enland, we don't get many sunny days any way (it is pouring outside right now and all lights are on at 14:37!) therefore sunlight has never been an issue. I had best ereading experience on Pocket Pcs (the small form factor, the backlit screen, adjustable brightness, buttons in the right place, excellent MS Reader for PPC) but for PDFs and magazines I prefer my iPad (again backlit!)

I have a Nook1 and a Nook Color. I used my Nook Color almost exclusively all winter for indoor reading, but once spring came I use my Nook1 most of the time. Except for in bed, then I use my Nook Color.
I will probably get a Nook2 because then I would carry it in my purse more. The Nook1 is a bit heavy and large to carry around all of the time. I do also use my Android phone, but it is mostly for when I am out and don't have my other readers with me. |

I have a Sony PRS-650, a Sony PRS-350, an original Nook, and a Viewsonic gTablet.
The two Sony readers are my favorites. They both work the same way, and they are both very comfortable to use. I find that I don't care about the difference in size, and I don't use the card slots or the MP3 player in the 650. If they both disappeared tomorrow and I had to buy a replacement, I'd get the 350 because it's cheaper and more widely available. The Nook has wireless, and if you allow it, it will synch to your B&N account. This would be great if more than ten percent of the ebooks I owned came from B&N. But most of my collection came from elsewhere. I eventually turned the wireless off to preserve the battery, and have not used it since. I don't like the color touch strip at the bottom and I don't like the stiff page turn buttons. I also find that it feels big and heavy compared to my Sonys. And I put a skin on it because the white case is too bright next to the screen. The gTablet is nice for reading in the dark. I installed the Aldiko reader software. You just touch the corner to turn the page, instead of having to swipe, and I like this better than the page turns on any of my other devices. But it is heavy and the backlit screen does stress my eyes more. Wireless is only a useful feature if you get all your books from one source such as Amazon or B&N, or if you travel away from your PC a lot. Neither of these apply to me, so I wouldn't pay extra to have it. I think that memory size, and card slots, are not important factors in choosing a device, because ebooks just don't need much space, and the limiting factor is actually the library management. Sony does this the best of any of my devices, but it's better still to just do it on the PC. |
