What I want to know is just what B&N is doing with the font rendering to make it so poor?

Try a Kobo - it offers 7 fonts plus user-loaded fonts, as of recent update 1.9.5.

(also, not sure how constructive your suggestion is to people that are Nook Touch owners that want to improve the font) |

Some folks here haven't actually bought a Touch yet. They might be interested in an alternative that does type better.
Hand-tweaked bitmapped fonts were used on the earlier Macs, with considerable success. Not a bad approach for performance if you don't have the CPU power for complex hinted rendering. However, it means that you have to invest up front in developing the raster versions, the fonts usually wind up looking much like bit-mapped printing on an original Mac low-res wire-matrix printer (with coarse gradations in stroke width), and few font sizes. The reviews will all need to be updated or re-done. The features they've added are significant. |

The problem is that the weight of the lines in the fonts is not even. There are some thin lines where there should not be. It's like it's a different font. I compared an eBook on the nook that used Charis SIL to an eBook on my 650 using the same font and the Sony noticeably blew away the nook. The strokes of the font on the nook was very uneven. That maked the font look too light and not all that good for reading.

Hopefully they improve it in a patch. Some fonts show it worse than others. |

Has anyone compared the fonts on a rooted Nook Touch of the default Nook app font rendering vs the Kindle app or Aldiko app font rendering?

I have a 650 and it does have page turn buttons. I've used the page turn buttons less then 10 times since owning the 650. Not having page turn buttons is a non-issue. Having a really poor font rendering engine is a major issue. So for right now, the nook is a no-go (IMHO) since it renders very poorly.

What's not clear is which layer of technology would need to be addressed: fonts, Adobe SDK, device driver, etc. What is strange to me is that the B&N Nook forums and nookboards don't seem to have anyone complaining about this. Granted traffic there is minimal but I don't see how people can not notice unless they never use font smaller than size 4. Or maybe they have no reference for comparison. |

Check out the following screen grab from a Sony Reader 950. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/att...4&d=1308939746 That is using Charis SIL. If anyone with a nook is unsure if you have any eBooks use this font, download one of the samples of any of the new Star Wars eBooks. They use Charis SIL. Then compare the two. I'd like to get opinions from nook STR owners. To be honest, I'm not sure you should have your GF get a nook. Especially with no word on if B&N is going to fix the font rendering engine.
