"The Nook 2 is exactly what I learned I wanted in the Kindle."

+1 - I too came from a K3 to the NT, and prefer it - the K3 keyboard and all the buttons are pure annoyance, and the non-reading features, like music and browsing, work badly enough to be useless.

I went into barnes and noble tonight fully expecting to buy a nook simple touch. I left without one. I loved the thiness but I hated the width. I have small hands and it was uncomfortable for me to hold. That was the deal breaker for me.

Interesting. Yesterday I want to BN fully expecting not to buy a nook touch, and left with one. I was really impressed by the responsiveness of the touch screen and the contrast of the newer version display. I was also blown away by the tiny size, I found it very comfortable to hold. I am a big fan of the industrial design of the 1st edition nook, so I wasn't expecting to like this new one. I was very, very pleasantly surprised. I've been playing with it for the last two days and have not had any major, dealbreaker kind of problems with it.
For the record: I'm a longtime ebook reader who has been using eink devices for about 4 years now. The ghosting on the new nook doesn't bother me one bit, as it's still quite a bit less ghosting than I was accustomed to on my Sony 505. I never used the games, music or web browser feature on my 1st gen nook (3g), except to try them out once or twice. I'm pretty sure the nook touch was designed precisely for a consumer like me, who just wants their device to read and not do much else. I don't particularly want to shop on the thing, even.
Now, if we could customize the library view, that would be gangbusters.

Is using a cover not an option for you?

I just saw the new nook in the store yesterday. I really expected to be tempted by it since the reviews said it had less flashing and a better screen. While I could see the better contrast, I also saw tons more flashing on page turns then I do with my current nook. It was so bad I went and tried two other units thinking it had to be a defect. They all had bad flashing, both to me and the person who was with me. I went from wondering what I could do with my old nook when I got the new one, to being worried what I can do if my current nook breaks and these are all that are available as replacements. No way I could use it for reading, hopefully a firmware update can fix it, or a new model comes out before I need to upgrade.

Me too... but for different reasons. So close yet so far away for my liking. On the plus side my first edition is holding up pretty well so maybe I'll skip a generation and like the next one better.

Out of curiosity, why was the width a dealbreaker for you? I assume you mean the width from one side of the screen to the other. Do you usually use one hand from edge to edge to hold it? Why not hold it flat on your palm, then?

I got a 350 on clearance for the portability. Much as I love my original Nook, it was bulky/heavy to cart around in my purse. Once I got the 350, however, I realized that the ideal state would be a 5" reader while on the hoof and a 7" reader while at home. The 6" size seems to me a compromise, not that there's anything wrong with that for the person who wants just one.

I was lucky enough to snag one of the refurbed 950s for $129 and I can't wait. The Nook will still be in play for my B&N content and it IS a far better ebookstore than the alternatives for ePub. Then I'm deviced out. Barring catastrophe, I should be able to sit out until the next generation or the one after.

+1. I just got my STR on Sunday, and I like it a lot. But one of the "cons" is that it seems to be hard (so far) to find a comfortable way to grip it, especially when I'm reading in bed. It's too wide to hold comfortably with one hand, and there's too little room at the bottom to grip it there like I usually do with my K3. Maybe I'll figure it out eventually.
