Anyone know what exactly is involved in testing? I've never done it before. I assume we'd have to install the beta firmware on our own devices, but is there anything else we should know?

Agreeing to beta test any software (or in this case "firmware", the software which runs a piece of hardware), is a commitment of time, possibly some frustration, and a willingness to document and report your experience using the device after applying the changes.

The payoff is having a sneak peek at proposed features and potentially having real influence in improving the way the device works that suits you.

The frustration comes (in this case) from the potential that your Kobo Touch may stop working and you'll have to go through some hoops to restore it to its original state as purchased and then apply updates and sync your library again. I believe the KT is built in such a way that you can't "brick it" permanently ... the paperclip trick can always get you back to GO.

Some betas are quite formal with a task list to follow. Others are free form where you essentially install a patch and then report back what you see. You may be asked to try to duplicate something you have reported or supply more details. To be most valuable, you should be willing to try many different features of the device and a number of different ebooks, and supply a brief summary of what worked, what didn't, and respond promptly if the developers reach back. They are typically under intense deadlines to test and release a new patch.

If you are so inclined, it's fun. If not, sit back, relax, and know that good things are in the pipeline in the coming days and weeks.

I would go a bit further and say that it really helps to be able to "work and play well" with others. It's a collaborative process, but testers don't necessarily know the whys behind all of the decisions that are made--including why something that seems like a big want isn't being addressed at the time of testing.

People bring different skills to the process. I have only a modicum of knowledge about the technical constraints that may be affecting firmware, but I have years of experience writing technical manuals, curriculum, and developing other educational material. That's my strength, I think. So I am not the person who will be having tech discussions with the developer, I'm the tester that says things like "document the differences in this way" or "I want a darker font".

But taming thats a real world response. I for one think "I want a darker font" is the most important thing a beta tester can offer. Because rather then the firmware only doing what the developer thinks should be force fed to us, its nice to have input on features we really want. Not just what the developer says we should have no ifs or buts about it!. BTW I am not saying kobo is doing that, its just an observation from other things.

Any way real world input is the most important thing a developer has. It helps them to develop real improvements, not just stabilizations and limitations. Theres nothing worse then a developer crippling their hardware just because they feel no need for things that they dont use.

regards

jack

Just updated software today. Please focus on important things - NOT fonts and margins! My Kobo is slow to respond with highlighting, has horrible black ghosting and the battery life is poor compared to the SONY.

As a person who's using both the 350 and the KT still, I like the Kobo's extensive font and margin customisation options. The two devices complement each other nicely. For the black ghosting, have you tried fiddling with the page refresh options?

Also, wrong thread.

I do know one features that would be a very very nice feature to have. That would be a newer version of ADE that does hyphenation.
