I couldn't really vote because my 95 yr old mother has macular degeneration and can't see wll enough to do lots of things. i did give her my first ereader which she loves and has no trouble working although I download the books onto it. I'm sure if she could see well enough that she could use a computer competently (yeah I know there are aids for blind people) but as I don't live near her I can't be there to help out.

As a Mum who is probably in the age group you are targeting, I'm not a techno wizz unless you compare me with most of my friends
I've never learnt any programming techie sort of stuff (what do you have sons for after all?) but I can use the computer . And I'm the one who tunes in the TV and PVR etc.

I hope you don't feel too left out by my tongue-in-cheek voting choices! I've just been rolling my eyes at the whole "women over the age of X are technologically clueless" meme.

My mother passed a couple of years ago, but she definitely was NOT scared of technology. She kept in touch by computer with her whole extended family, and loved digital photography. I can't say I was the technical help, that's what my oldest sister's hsuband was for (he keeps the computers running for a school district), but I did get the occasional call for help. Usually she didn't need help, though. I voted for option two.

Oh, yeah. Mom is definitely more proficient with tech than my late stepfather was.

"Stephanie said she sent me an email and I can't get it on there." Yeah, that's a common call I get from my mom. My mother was a business owner/accountant/finance person and after she retired, she got a computer and I was shocked to discover that she had never used one before. She always had a secretary run reports for her. She was a whizz on the 10-key adding machine.

But at least she tries. My dad would never attempt to turn on a computer for any reason.

Tech support from beyond the grave.... Probably easier than with living persons.

My mom is 73 and still working. She is a way smart woman and runs a credit department and has about 15 people under her supervision.

Recently she had need to buy a laptop and set it up with 3g. She was so bad at it I thought she was fooling around then when I figured she wasn't I thought she had perhaps had a stroke. I was slack jawed at how confusing she found it all.

Nah, I just think of DH who still can't do timer recording on the PVR and even once managed to completely delete everything I had set and detune the PVR as well

my mom is now 61. she has a shiny new droid phone, that she can answer, and maybe call you back if she misses the call. (i dont bother with leaving VM though - she never gets em)

there are 3 or 4 laptops, and a desktop or 2 in her house - but she doesn't have an email account. seriously. my little brother (35 going on 14 - long story) is the onsite tech - but he knows "just enough to be dangerous". seems i spend a lot of time reinstalling windows - cause i really don't try to fix what he has broken anymore.

my mom has a Kobo with about 2k books on it - well it did, till my brother started f-ing around with memory cards, and corrupted the 4gb that went in it. her laptop has a 9k+ book calibre library. she also has a generic 7" tabreaderlet thing - color screen junk. my brother reads on his phone - but he is a "bury the nose in it" reader - horrible eyesight, and reads w/o his glasses.

Mom is a nurse in a long term rehab facility. they had a really good aide that was leaving, that they traded DTB's with for years. everyone chipped in and got her a kobo and a 4gb card, and mom loaded it full. the aide ended up staying.

so, i guess i am like her tier 3 support. i fix what the helpdesk makes worse. just like at work
