It looks like KEPUBs only
![]() What a let down! Another proprietary "feature." Hopefully when support for fonts goes live regular EPUBs are included in the mix. The biggest downside to the Kobo is the KEPUB-only features... |

Kepub only. sorry but that is dissapointing.
I have been a die hard kobo supporter since the KO but this is getting on my nerves. Sameer if you are listening it is time to ditch the kepub only font, dictionary, and notes. If you want to compete with the other readers ![]() On further reflection I can see the advantage for KOBO to have the kepub their 'value added' format that way the booksotore has a competitive advantage over the other sources of content. that being said i have some older epubs that I would really like to be able to change the font on. Last edited by baronrus; 06-21-2011 at 02:03 PM. Reason: further reflection |

I don't really mind that much that this only works for kepubs, though I suspect that this issue is related to the dictionary and highlight limitations.

Remember, this is a feature that has not yet been officially released! We know that some things that are currently kepub only will, at some point, be available for other formats. We just don't know what features, or when.
Me editorializing with nothing but my own opinion. I'm willing to bet that a whole lot of Kobo users are buying the Kobo, downloading their books from Kobobooks and not looking for much beyond the best feature set that works with books purchased this way. Building out for them first makes sense to me--especially since Kobo has to pay a fee to Adobe for each book that is added to the reader as ADE ePUB--which is probably the 2nd most popular way folks are adding books to their readers. Of course they make zero, zilch, nada for books added to the reader from other stores or obtained in other ways. Kobo eventually has to make a profit, and doing this first makes a certain amount of sense. Last edited by taming; 06-21-2011 at 12:15 AM. Reason: editorial comments |

I can confirm that you can also use these "alternate" fonts for newspaper subscriptions. And for serif-hating readers like me, it's definitely nice to be able to use something darker than Avenir.
I copied the entire contents of /usr/local/calibre/resources/fonts/liberation/ from my Calibre installation to my /media/KOBOeReader/fonts/ and now I have a nice dark LiberationSans to read with. I'm only assuming, but I imagine that copying over all four font files is required for "best" font viewing, so that italics and bold will all be rendered at their finest. For whatever it's worth, even with all four files in the fonts directory the Kobo's font chooser only shows "LiberationSans": LiberationSans-BoldItalic.ttf LiberationSans-Bold.ttf LiberationSans-Italic.ttf LiberationSans-Regular.ttf |

The book code indicates when bold, italics etc is used. We don't have to make that choice, only the name of the font is needed.

My point being that you CAN just put in the plain "LiberationSans-Regular.ttf" file, but then when the Kobo needs to render italics or bold then it would only be kind of emulated. By also including the "-Bold" "-Italic" and "-BoldItalic" files then they're available for more "proper" font rendering. The link #16 by Psyke above explains that a little bit better.

When you drag and drop from windows font folder the variants are also installed. I did not mean to imply that one should only install the single file and then let emulation do its thing.
