Actually, they're not all that unique. Microsoft has, for years, muscled its way into software arenas where there were already established leaders (c.f, Internet Explorer vs. Netscape, Microsoft Word vs. WordPerfect, Lotus 123 vs. Excel).

I think the most unique thing about Apple is the Cult of Jobs. You very rarely (especially in the media) see a company treated so uncritically as Apple has been treated. The first sign of the media not kissing Jobs' posterior was the flap over the iPhone 4 antenna, and from the reaction from the Apple fans, you'd think the press was accusing Jobs of eating the flesh of newborn babies and sucking the marrow from their bones.

You have a short memory or are too young to remember macbooks getting so hot and burning people's laps. Or OS Leopard problems of '07, iMac display problems in '07, and on and on back to the Apple Newton from 1988, or the shadow of a bankruptcy in 2002.

A person has to have a significant amount of emotional bias against Apple to believe that Apple's success is solely because of a sympathetic media and mindless robot customers.

As for Android tablets competing with the iPad, Google stumbled significantly IMO with the non-release of Honeycomb. In a fledgling market with a rapidly growing 800lb gorilla there is no room for a misstep. It will take some time for Google to regroup and I believe that Ice Cream Cone will be a big step.

As for the HP TouchPad, it will stumble out of the gate just like the Playbook. It is fascinating to see how everyone laughed at the iPad when it was first announced in Jan 2010, but resulted in companies like HP scrapping their tablet plans. The bar has been raised for HP because of the stumbled starts of competitors and an 18 month regrouping.

MS muscled, and got whacked by the antitrust courts for it.

Apple did no such thing in the MP3 player market, the touch-phone market, nor the tablet market.

They just built and offered products that people wanted to buy.

A person has to have a significant amount of emotional bias against Apple to believe that Apple's success is solely because of a sympathetic media and mindless robot customers.
I'd point out two things:

1) How much negative press did they get for the Leopard problems? As far as the laptop problems, Macbooks weren't unique in that, and didn't really get singled out. Ditto for the iMac display problems. When there have been problems, they've been whispered about, at most.

2) Every time Jobs farts, there's a press conference, with everyone in the media who can attend, attending. (And in fact, the few people who have shown serious backbone against Apple, like Leo Laporte, don't get invites after they rebel). And, importantly, despite the missteps, Jobs has still, until Antennagate, been treated like he could do no wrong.

Compare the treatment Apple gets to the treatment in the tech press of any other competitor. Mostly, they get the kid glove treatment.

I agree there. Honeycomb wasn't the big tablet OS they needed -- at least, not initially. As more apps become available for tablets, that could change, but it probably won't change before Ice Cream.

I think the TouchPad will have the same basic problem as the Playbook: They need to follow up the premium apps I talked about with more of the same. That might be hard to do unless they can get a better-than-half-assed marketing campaign.

It amuses me to see people try to disqualify Apples hard work by calling it nothing more than the protection and coddling of the press.

with the iPod it was more iTunes then the device itself. Napster showed the regular joe the beauty of the world of digital downloading music. When napster went down, iTunes came in to filll a void so to speak. it was pure timing and maybe a bit of luck.
If napster doesn't come down, no iTunes, no iTunes then I don't even know if Apple would be around today.

It amuses me the blinders apple fans have on if they really don't think Apple doesn't get special treatment. Apple plays dirty with their advertising revenue and sending out products to be reviewed. You don't sing the praises of an Apple product it's next big thing just may not be on your reviewer desk until a week or two after others have received their products and their reviews are out.
Ask Ellen Degeneras if ABC didn't bend over for Apple and make her do an on air apology to Apple for running a skit that mocked the iPhone. Do you really think ABC just "felt bad and thought it was mean to pick on apple"

and the white iPhone being announced on the Nightly News? Really? but yeah your right they're not coddled

i would so be willing to bet my retirement savings that 80% of apple owners own the said product only because it's Apple and have no reason why they "think" it's better than competing products.
You really think that tweener in her Hello Kittybackpack would want anything else but an iPod even if you show her the Sansa's or Walkman's are that much better.

or how about that hipster in his early 20's with his fake black rimmed glasses, fedora hat on, sipping soy milk latte's, do you really think they buy a mac, iPad or iPhone because of anything else besiders that apple logo?

You are very blinded to this reality.

Revionist history. There were those who were completely at odds with using Napster and number 2. Most people used iTunes to manage their iPod, not to buy music. I think I remember reading that only about 25% of all music on iPods was bought at a digital download site.

No, Apple built hardware that people wanted to buy (even though there were devices with more features on the market at the same time)

Nice try, though.

All PR works that way.

you're not serious are you?

The only ones who were completely at odds with Napster were the labels and bands. I know of NO consumer that was at odds with napster.

and I don't know where you get the whole iPod made iTunes succesfull. you really need to go back and research that. iTunes was a way to download music now, under one umbrella and you had to only use an iPod to use that service.

but nice try though

Wrong again. If you're going to attempt to debate, at least do it in good faith.

Napster 'died' in 2001. The iTunes store opened in 2003. The iPod was released in 2001. Windows support was added in 2003.
