Of course changing the serial is not really a jailbreak as then you have essential traded Kindles with someone else. I can already do that without any hacking at all. But you are correct. It just won't work for many Kindle owners.

I would, for sure. I've taken advantage of enough of the offers to offset the price I paid for the Kindle. The good offers don't seem to be coming quite as fast as they did when it was first released, though. Amazon will have to continue to present desirable offers, even if they are less frequent, or nobody wins. At that point the product will become redundant and it might as well be eliminated. Actually, it's been a bit fun anticipating the offers.

As for the ads themselves, they don't bother me at all. Looking at them or not looking at them, it makes no difference to me as long as the ads don't interrupt my reading. The current KSO does not.

I'm sure there are more than a few of us who are reading on their "free" KSO's. It's been worth it for me so far and I expect it will continue to be. Even though the last 5 offers have been a bust for me, I'm sure there will be plenty more that I'll take advantage of.

I've only had my KSO for about a week and today is the first special offer I've seen: $10 for $30 in the Amazon Swim Store. I don't swim, so a worthless offer to me but I'm sure good for some people. It seems like the offers should be eBook related or Kindle accessory related. I could go for an offer to purchase books at a discount, or even just an Amazon gift card at a discount so I could use it on what I need or want. But these kinds of offers are as useless as the ones I get with CVS Pharmacy which generally involve items men do not buy! Even the Best Buy Rewards discounts are often negated by their "can't use it for anything you want to buy" stipulations. so I guess this is pretty much standard--make offers that look good at first glance but that will ultimately not be used by most customers.

Nevertheless I didn't buy the KSO for the offers. I bought it to save $25 on a Kindle. It was a good decision and I would certainly repeat my purchase again.

EDIT: Not to be sexist, but at least the $10 for $30 in the Amazon Swim Store offer has a picture of a bikini clad woman which is way better than any of the dead author images!

Three of the next five offers will be. See the Special Offers thread.

I would most definitely buy one again. It hasn't quite paid for itself yet - just over halfway there, but that's not counting the savings on the lighted cover. I'd been wanting one, but couldn't justify spending $60 on another cover, so I don't really count that as money saved, it just allowed me to get something I really wanted that otherwise I would have done without (and that's a big plus too!)

I agree; and that's how I rationalize my savings. If it's something I already planned on buying, I subtract the savings. If it's something I didn't plan on buying but did because of the savings, then I don't subtract it. At this point I'm already at the free mark, so anything else is just free money.

Isn't that a little like saying that all the ads on TV should be TV-related?

I've had the KOO (Kindle Oil of Olay) for a couple of months now and the only advertisers have been Buick, VISA and OO. It looks to me like ads on the Kindlw are going nowhere as no new advertisers are signing up.

I'm definitely glad I got the KSO, especially since it's worked out that the offers are per *device*, which is good for me, since I bought THREE! (my son, my niece, and myself). We're all having fun with summer reading, and I get lots of deals!

I suppose calling it the KOBO (Kindle Oil of Buick Olay) would create confusion for ereader shoppers (or KOBO Touch if you behave inappropriately towards the bikini-clad woman in the swim store ad).

The worst part of the ads is that it targets me in a demographic that uses Oil of Olay and drives a Buick. What's next, ads for Milk of Magnesia and Lawrence Welk compilation DVDs?
