So the K4 is going to need a screen that stands up and says; "Wow!" for me to even think about compromising on the cheaper build and less satisfying ergonomics. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Amazon is "improving" their way out of one less repeat customer.
if that screen stands up and says anything at all, i'm running for the hills

Well AMD and Intel have just made available a new generation of chip technology with lower power requirements meaning that there will be a new model of Kindles shortly as soon as Amazon can adapt the new chips to their product. The lower power requirements menas that your new Kindle 4 will last longer between charges. If you can't wait try the new Kobo Touch or Nook simple Touchm i beleive that both products use the new chips.

Right now both kindle 3 and kindle DX have pearl e-ink screens. Just adding a touchscreen won't be enough for a new generation.
Well a number of people are saying the dx needs a firmware update to that of the k3. I would like to see a new dx with wifi, left side page turn buttons, more durable 5 way button. I would still like one as it is but with all the complaints about firmware (not that I am fully understanding the issues) I am hesitant.

I think it's safe to say that dedicated eReaders with a 9.7" screen like the DX, are on life-support. If you really, truly want one, you better get it while you still can.

Well E-ink and Epson have announced a 300 dpi screen (current displays are about 160 dpi). It's for a 9.7" display right now.

A resolution bump is the most important thing to me for next generation e-readers. I hope the next Kindle uses it. But I assume it wouldn't be ready for this year and with Amazon launching their tablet sometime this year I imagine a spring 2012 release for the next Kindle seems likely. But I'd love them to surprise us.

I've used a kindle 3 for some time and then gave it to a friend and got the DX for the larger screen. The pearl screen still amazes me just like the first time i looked at a kindle 3 screen but the difficulties you mentioned are there.

At least by porting the 3.x software to kindle DX you overcome some of these but the absence of the left side page turn buttons, lack of wifi and the joystick problems are still there.

But i too think instead of just overcoming these difficultities and releasing an upgraded kindle DX, amazon will wait for the next big leap in e-ink world (color e-ink, high dpi, much faster refresh rates making video possible). I don't think touch screen or or any of the minor difficulties i mentioned before is enough for the next gen.

I'm not expecting a new Kindle to be released till Summer 2012, if it was for this fall we would have heard by now, and Amazon doesn't seem to release around Christmas.

For me an upgrade would have to have library lending for the UK, colour e-ink, faster refresh and a faster processor. I don't see the point of touch screen (mucky fingerprints all over).

AMD and Intel manufacture x86 (CISC) processors, which have higher power requirements than ARM (RISC) processors. You won't find an x86 processor in any eReader or smartphone in the market, the power consumption is too high for extended battery life. The new nook touch and kobo reader use ARM processors , both based on the ARM Cortex-A8 architecture (TI OMAP for nook, Freescale for kobo).

I am crossing my fingers and hoping that they resist the temptation to go with a touch screen. I never knew how bad touch screens were until I got my Kindle 3. It barely took a week and I had abandoned my nook. For me, touch screens are just terrible and take significantly longer to get around.

Based on the rumors, it looks as though they are adding additional devices and branching out, while keeping the Kindle 4 closer to the original concept. Thank goodness they have the resources to do both.

While I agree to an extent, I like having a touch-screen for some things. For just straight reading, though? Yeah, I like how the Kindle already works well enough without having to put my grubby mitts all over the screen to turn a page.
