Why would that surprise you?

It's not illegal. And it's helped sell way more units than B&N ever would have otherwise. They're going to spend the time, money, effort, and customer goodwill to start banning people for bringing it up? That's a good idea, yeah.

You know, it never entered my mind not to ask for help on my NC. I never thought that something that is so openly talked about in MF, instructions posted all over You tube etc, was anything really wrong to do. It's my Nook, I paid for it and the books on it..Some were purchased from Amazon, some from Kobo and some from Barnes and Noble, but they are all legally purchased with a couple of freebies from B & N. I can't see why they are griping.. I wanted to read a new release for a few minutes to see if I wanted it in paper or digital. My tab at the checkout counter was $178.00 for hardcopy books and a game for my grandson..Naturally they waited for me to purchase those items before throwing my rooted NC out...
One customer behind me asked me how I did it and I referred them to this forum and you SCION... ha ha... now I"m ready to put the newer root on it and will be bugging you all again this weekend for instructions..

Same reason that I wouldn't ask an Apple "Genius" for help with my jailbroken iPhone. You're using a device in a manner that the manufacture did not intend and that probably voids its warranty. Apple actively tries to squelch jailbreaking, even stating that it's a violation of the end-user license agreement and I am just surprised (pleasantly, mind you) that B&N isn't the same way.

-------------

ETA: The eighth post on this page validates my assumptions pretty concisely. Relevant quote:
Quote:
Barnes and Noble has been lenient so far towards people rooting their Nook Colors, but they do not have to be, they can terminate your service as per their user agreement if you root the device.
...
Illegal may not be the correct term, a violation of your user agreement that could cause your service to be terminated may be better.

(d) Restrictions. Except as may be expressly permitted by this Agreement, you may not, directly or indirectly: (i) use the Software on any device other than your NOOKcolor; (ii) use, copy, modify, distribute copies of, display or transmit the Software; (iii) disassemble, reverse engineer, emulate, decompile, tamper with, create derivative works from or otherwise attempt to discover the source code of the Software or the technology used to provide the Service or attempt to reduce the Software to human-readable form;
The Nook Terms of Service.

That's not what the website says:

Quote:
Stop by any Barnes & Noble store with your NOOK or NOOK Color in hand and read NOOK Books FREE for up to one hour per day.
The only limiting factor in that statement was the amount of time you were allowed per day. It says nothing about limiting the books.

Did he scream like a girl too? I'd actually love it if that happened. :P For me, I'd say that officially, I know nothing, but unofficially, backup and try re-rooting it. Some methods cut it off, others don't.

OP: Have you tired different books? Have you purchased books from B&N (or, do you have a valid address and credit card on your account?) Have you verified that the book is still available to read in store? Check the demo unit to see since the store units are basically reset daily. If it IS available and you still can't get it to work, I'd say you need a new unit. The store should be happy to replace it for a NC that works properly. It's probably a bug. Make sure anything you want to keep and your SD card is off and out of the NC and take in as much of the original packaging as possible. Register it in store and make sure you can read in store no problem.

But of course. You know, it's time to go back to that store and find the guy who evicted your NC. Then show him your Kindle and sit down and read.

So it voids your warranty. Fine. That's not what you said, though - you said you were surprised B&N ALLOWED people to talk about it on the forums. And I'm saying that trying to shut it down would be (a) futile and (b) stupid and (c) REALLY stupid.

Yes, Apple has fought the jailbreaking fight. They were stupid to do so and they lost. Now, AFAIK, it's legal to jailbreak your phone, regardless of whether it's an Apple or not. They spent a lot of money, lost a lot of customer goodwill, and generally made a fool out of themselves to fight something that WAS NEVER REALLY HURTING THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE.

And you think it's odd that B&N doesn't follow in their clever footsteps.

Sorry, not trying to pick on you, just... thought your statement was funny.

EDIT: If the tone of your post was just "I'm shocked that a big business isn't acting in the stupid way that big businesses usually do", then I see your point and concur.

Please note that when I had the exact same problem, my device was spanking new and had not been rooted at the time.

So while these are not bad suggestions, I doubt that the issue is due to the root. I wouldn't bother re-rooting just to read in store, but then again the nearest store to me is 45 minutes away.

The other stuff (checking the book on a display Nook) is a good idea, though.

Well, you asked why I was surprised. Yes, it boiled down to an assumption of corporate stupidity. I grew up used to PCs which were completely customizable and then grew to accept handheld devices which weren't (after the failure of customizable handhelds). I actually don't blame them; it's a good shield to keep people who don't know what they're doing from customizing the snot out of something and then complaining that it doesn't work. So, yeah, since B&N obviously is intentionally locking down their device out of the box, I'm a bit (pleasantly, as I said before) that B&N isn't maintaining that same lock-down attitude after the box.

Did you think I was scolding Dixieknits for having rooted? Perish the thought! I've spent hours (gotta love summer break) over the past few days determining the best way (for me) to root mine. I just figure (and still sort of do) that once I do it, I won't have a right to expect any software support from B&N. Well, unless I flash back, of course.

I had the same thing happen to me. I even went to two different B&N stores. When I went back a few days later to read more of the book, my NC displayed the same message. I wasn't able to get anyone to help me, but I am going back today and hopefully I won't get the same message. This first occured about 3-4 weeks ago.
