Most of us have some kind of blot somewhere on the display that is lighter or some darker. If you were to take measurements you'd find that background is not uniform. It is normal. You just know it's there. After a while of enjoying what you read, you just don't see it unless you're looking for trouble.

BTW: My wife just got her replacement Sony 500 reader from Sonystyle. The bad one was received by Sony on on 09-16-2007.

Next time I am driving to a Sonystyle store and dealing with it in person. I understand there was a backlog of orders, glad this is over.

The main reason between 505's & 500's is that the 505's have a later 'generation' of the eInk display, where they've managed to improve contrast, ghosting, etc.

The VizPlex screens used by the 505, Kindle, Gen3, etc, don't seem to suffer from ghosting. It was only an issue with the 1st generation screen which the 500 uses.
