I tried it one hour ago in Indigo (Montreal downtown) and I will share my personal view:
Design: Very nice piece. I read some comment about the switch on/off and the central button. For me everything seems good. Also the device is light and feels good in the hand. Reading: There was 2 fonts, I prefer the serif one. The touching was not really responsive and I was quite surprised because I have a PRS-700 and it was as responsive as the demo unit (I've handled 3 demo units). The dictionary function was not easy to activate as you need to highlight a word and not simply touch it. Library: It does the job. You have a view with one book per page, it would be great to have a summary of the book when in this view, perhaps in the future... To be noted, I think it really clever to have the different books you are currently reading on the homepage. Store, Reading Life : That was really the annoying part. You couldn't access the wifi because it needed a key on the demo with a library and you couldn't touch anything with the 2 others because they hadn't been sync yet. So much for a trial then. In resume, I spent some time in both boards (Kobo & Nook) and was eager to try the Kobo Touch as soon as I heard the announcement. After what I saw today, I know for sure I won't buy it before they arrange a lot of things in their OS. As I live in Canada, I have not tried the Nook yet but for what I saw on reviews, it seems a more reliable product so far but to be honest, I still love my 700 so maybe I'm not quite ready for a trade off ![]() |

I would not be surprised if the demo versions were running pre-release versions of the software. The ones at my Chapters are running only what they shipped with, rather than the June 9 version I got when I set mine up. In any case, playing with a demo machine in a store and then comparing it unfavourably to a reader you have never tried at all, seems less than ideal.

Indeed taming, the version was of the 20th of May...
Also, as I said, it was only via video reviews that I could draw some conclusions. When I watched the Kobo presentation, I saw people had to tap twice because the first tap was not registered and I feared just that.... Last edited by Dedale; 06-10-2011 at 09:07 PM. |

Yeah--I know they were working things like that all along--and the videos are relatively old. I had to double tap only when I was adjusting the minutes in time zone etc settings, never for things like page turns. It does require a different kind of touch though than a capacitive screen and it may very well be that i had not twigged to that yet when I was setting up the clock.

Someone I follow on Twitter, who does have a new Nook Touch, tweeted that the Nook freezes from time to time. I haven't heard the same thing said of the Kobo, but it's still early days. I'm still loading up books on mine, but I'm loving it so far!

I have had some sorta freezes. In the past, with earlier iterations of the Kobo, we used to use the word freeze to indicate that we had to do a reset of some sort. With the issues I have had, clicking on the home button has worked to recover from what was happening.
