Plus, I'm thinking that 8gb is a little small, if she want to put on a lot of apps, or any videos.

Hey, according to this article I can blame Apple for the 2G/3G confusion after all. That makes me feel better.
"it does create additional splintering of Apple's mobile platform at a time when the uniformity of the platform is seen as one of its biggest assets. [. . .] it seems unnecessary to create a disparity in the capabilities of iPod touch models from the same generation." |

"iOS 4.2 is the latest version of iOS for iPod touch (2nd generation)." That is the end of the line for the 2G, so don't expect anymore major updates. And yes, if you type in the model number for my so-called 8GB 3G it is clearly listed as a 2G. (For some strange reason I kept my 1G and 2G touches after upgrading.) |

That's encouraging. I just saw some videos that showed pretty sad performance on the 2G for loading apps. It hasn't cause any kind of enjoyment issues for your girls?
What apps do they like? |

Some apps do take longer to load, but not really a problem as it dosen't affect game play. There is a lag on some of the more graphic intensive games, but those tend to be first person shooters (or the sort of games I don't want them playing).
My girls like: Super Why anything Dora the Explorer Angry Birds Bounce On Doodle Jump Blowfish Sneezies Make a Martian Gomi any simple drawing app KidCalc iBooks We've only scratched the surface of the intactive books, they like them but they are reading at a grade three level and prefer chapter books now. |

Hey, just a quick followup:
We got the iPod last week, and braced ourselves for needing to immediately return it. It was in great condition, so we tried it out. All but one* of of the apps my daughter uses worked fine, and while, load times were indeed slower than the 4G, it wasn't a problem. So we gave it to my daughter on her birthday and got her a little pink silicone case in a discount store (old-generation stuff is dirt cheap!) and the Apple store put one of our spare screen protectors on it. She loves it! So I guess we're keeping it. :-) By the time she out grows it or wants a particular game system, I figure a whole new generation of stuff will have come and gone. Thanks for all the comments! *by the way, the one app that didn't work was the interactive Going to Bed Book. Which is really weird...can't understand, of all things, why that would require the newer hardware. And I'm not counting apps that require a camera. Obviously we didn't expect any of those work on a device without a camera, so she'll still have to borrow her mom's when she wants to make funny faces or put her face on a princess body.....fair enough. |

The other option - especially when buying used is to get an old iPhone and run it without a SIM - you do need a SIM to activate it after a wipe - but it can be a cheap alternative to an iPod Touch. I got an 8GB 3GS (what would have effectively been an 8GB iPod 3G) for $25.
Works for me. |

Ah. I'll give you $30 for yours. :-) Actually, the iPod is smaller and lighter so probably better for our needs anyway, but it's a good idea. How would you handle the initial activation issue? ApK |

Many apps may not compatible with older device in the future, so you better get 4th-gen one
