Android 2.2 is well known to run significantly faster than 1.6 (which is what the eDGe has). When the eDGe gets Android 2.2 within the next couple of months, we should see significant and overall performance increases.

Android 2.2, like all phone OS, has an instant boot time. I hope that its faster speed will translate to a quicker boot of the eDGe software (less than 1min55sec anyway). If a Chinese Android 2.2 tablet boots in 20sec, there is at least some hope. But, ultimately, it will require better code as MichaelIV says, to get faster boot times. This is what happened when the whole world complained about Vista.... Windows 7 resulted with very respectable boot times.

Interesting. I didnt know that about WinMo phones. Well, anyway, the iPhone and the iPad are instant boot, as are many phones. I have never seen an Android phone, so I dont know how they do.

I haven't seen a phone do real instant startup from being powered off in a very long time. The different OS on these things have become more and more bloated and have longer and longer initialization times.

In normal use, most phones spend the majority of their time in a sleep mode and they do wake up from that nearly instantly -- a second or two. Likewise, the edge has varying degrees of power saving -- turning off the LCD, and going into a full sleep mode when the two halves are closed. The edge wakes up from the full sleep state in about 2 seconds.

I have to admit. I had the first one, and i liked it but did not use it as much as I should have because it was a little too big to be easily carry-able, but this smaller one looks to be the perfect size. I will most likely buy this one as well, if the price is reasonable.

Thanks in part to the Governator (Arnold) some details and pictures have been made public of this very interesting device. Conspicuously not mentioned anywhere yet is what version of Android it will ship with. If release is early November as some press reports said, I suspect it will be Android 1.6. Just interesting.

Quite possibly. The update to Android 2.2 would likely be the first update for the device. To ship it with Android 2.2 would require lead time in manufacturing, which would require the Android 2.2 to be released within the next 1-2 weeks at the most, which I'm guessing isn't likely. However, I'm hoping 2.2 will be released by the end of November.

They appear to be instant boot but that's because they are just being taken out of sleep mode.

Yes - we should be clear that "boot" means turning the power on the device from a complete power off state. My eDGe comes out of sleep almost instantly.

Within the contiguous United States the Pocket eDGe will be shipped for free... I'm curious, but not 349 bones curious.

I will be ordering it....but I wish they had International shipping. What a pain in the behind. And Pre-order....no problem... but looks like no "official" release date is given.
