drsteve- I can't speak for anyone else, but my own comments about any legal actions are purely hypothetical. As was pointed out, only the copyright holders of any GPL code that was used have any standing to initiate any kind of legal action, anyway.
My comment about the DMCA was based on the fact that the EE website has a page about the DMCA, and I find it hypocritical of them to talk about respecting copyrights when they themselves are not in compliance with the terms of the GPL. If they do not provide source code, they do not have a copyright license for the GPL components, and are themselves in breach of copyright. At the same time, I'm not interested in an adversarial relationship with EE. I'm very happy with the device, and part of the appeal to me was the openness of the system. I would love to see an official SDK, but a bare minimum is that EE should follow through on their GPL obligations. |

Other firms release full source code (so anyone can rebuild and run software by yourown). Exept for copyrighted sources... in case of EE I see only 2 items copyrighted by EE a e-ink driver (.so file), and journal (e-reader) software (include some demons).

Entourage has no need or legal obligation to release their source code to us - see below.
"Although the underlying Linux kernel is licensed under version 2 of the Free Software Foundation's General Public License (GPLv2), much of the user-space software infrastructure that will make up the Open Handset Alliance's platform will be distributed under version 2 of the Apache Software License (ASL). This raises certain questions about Google's goals in the mobile space and the nature of the third-party application ecosystem that will emerge around the platform. ASL, which is widely used in the open-source software community and has been approved by the Open Source Initiative, is a permissive license that is conducive to commercial development and proprietary redistribution. Code that is distributed under the ASL and other permissive licenses can be integrated into closed-source proprietary products and redistributed under a broad variety of other terms. Unlike permissive open-source licenses, "copyleft" licenses (such as the GPL) generally impose restrictions on redistribution of code in order to ensure that modifications and derivatives are kept open and distributed under similar terms. Permissive licenses like the ASL and BSD license are preferred by many companies because such licenses make it possible to use open-source software code without having to turn proprietary enhancements back over to the open source software community. These licenses encourage commercial adoption of open-source software because they make it possible for companies to profit from investing in enhancements made to existing open-source software solutions." Din0sG0R4wr, yes there's part where ASL licenses apply, but in EE there's MANY libraries and binaries that are GPL. GPL required that used in distribution modified source code MUST be published at release time (or included with release).

Also, I don't see anything interesting were used in EE from programmers point (comparing with Nook or AlexReader wich also used anroid).
Also note that NooK published source code after the legal pressure http://images.barnesandnoble.com/PRe...ource-code.zip Irex publish after loosing court http://developer.irexnet.com/pub/iOn/ So unwillingness to publsih source code is kind of disrespect to customers and developers and can lead to more serious problem. |

I guess you are right.
But just because they havent given us the code yet does not mean they are unwilling to. I was looking around and couldnt find any source code for the Alex either. I guess compared to Barnes and Nobles, and others, both Spring Design and Entourage are small companies so it will probably take some time before they can get it to us. Here is to hoping it comes soon |

Din0sG0R4wr, my request were ignored. I ask other members to send an request. You also can send request and we'll see if they will actually publish it.
p.s. size of company is not important. it's all about time that needed to gain an GPL familiar audience and to write request necessary to legally start GPL violation case. (6-8 month in general). So both Alex and EE soon will be close to breakpoint date. |

I really hope they monitor this forum and they understand the seriousness of our requests. we can report the GPL violations here. http://www.fsfe.org/projects/ftf/rep...ations.en.html
We should give Edge a month term then report them. |

IMHO, filing a GPL complaint is not productive at this point.

There is an old English idiom that goes something like this...
You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar For those who use English as a second language....this means that it is easier to persuade people if you use polite arguments and flattery than if you are confrontational. FWIW |

There's 2 old russian idioms:
Tongue wag - not flail swing ( - ), that meant that you need to actually do something beside useless chating. (It is easy to be wise when watching outside), that mean that you can't talk until you actually try to do something. So the same question as before, did YOU tried to DO something, or want to TRY to do, or you can just talk about it? |

This thread had two objectives: to check whether EE's officials read this forum and will EE respond if there will be large number of source code requests from users.
As far as we see, on both counts, the result is negative. If someone thinking that can handle situation in an better way.., you're welcome. |
