Your devices wifi needs to support "master" mode. Most mobile devices only do adhoc and managed mode either due to a lack of support by the chipset or even sadder, in the driver. Case in point, my droid.

Just tried it on my iPhone with MyWi. The eDGe does not see the SSID being broadcast. However, when I use my Juniper 5gt wireless firewall to survey the airwaves...it sees the SSID. Very weird.

Hi Robot,
I was wondering if you or anyone with the rooted EE have tried the following suggestion for adding adhoc support to the G1 android phone? http://elmurod.net/wps/?p=186 Who knows it my just work on the EE. Fred |

Since this seems to be somewhat important, I figured I'd get this working real quick. When I finish this frontend Ill upload it for your consumption. Requires root. Hopefully this will make it into our custom firmware.

Hello to all,
I am the happy owner of a HTC Desire. On my desire I received this week an update towards android 2.2, including the possibility to let my HTC work as a wifi hotspot. I have tried this possibility and it worked like a charm! From now on my EE is always online. I hope for you all that your android phones will update soon towards android 2.2. |

@gertjan.stoker - The droid is already running 2.2. Not every device has a driver and/or wireless chipset that supports master mode. Without that you can't use infrastructure AP mode, this is the motivator for this effort is being made. Anyhow congrats on being one of the lucky ones, enjoy your native tethering!

Hi shinkamui
Could you please provide the instructions to get adhoc wifi support on the edge? Now the we have debug support it should be easier right? A buddy of mine has an eDGe and an EVO, he says it works just fine!

I have a HD2 (similar to the Evo?) and unfortunately, even with its wireless router app, the EE doesn't see its SSID at all

Shinkamui, this looks very tantalizing! It's great that you're working on a front-end, but how does one get this working from the command prompt?
