Well, I am a Kindle 2 fan, and I bought a second one as a backup and for my son to use. Here is what I like about Kindle 2:
Solid construction. There have been far fewer returns of Kindle 2. Bigger and more solid page turn buttons -- easy to use, but resistant to errors. Full keyboard -- I like having a number row. I also like the 5-way. Easy to change battery. Buy really cheap cases while you can. Works great with Duokan for pdfs. Highlight a word, click the spacebar, and search Wikipedia (I couldn't find how to do this with a Kindle 3). 3G only. I don't need wifi, and 3G works all over the globe. As for improved contrast on the Kindle 3: yes, it is better, but the last update for Kindle2 gave some improvement. Kindle 2 is quite easy to read. If you don't compare it directly with Kindle 3, you won't have any complaints. I like my workhorse of a K2i Oh! All hacks work brilliantly -- no fear of an Amazon update messing things up. I have screensaver hack, font hack, Duokan lite (requires Launchpad), etc. Changed my margins, screensaver timeout, etc. Last edited by montalex; 06-07-2011 at 12:42 PM. |

The joystick and the page-turn buttons on the old Kindle 2 is definitely better than the Kindle 3's D-pad and smaller buttons. But the Kindle 3 is noticably lighter and the screen has better contrast. I also like the lighted cover of the Kindle 3 - it's really great.
Both Kindle 2 and 3 have good points - for me Kindle 3 comes out slightly better than K2. |

I still have my K2, but I never use it. I always grab the K3, and that is mainly due to the better screen contrast.

lol...ain't this place great eSheri?
![]() Seriously, ultimately, you are the only one who counts here [Captain Obvious speaks!]. Like anything else, try to be objective and decide what exactly it is you want from your hard earned cash. Objectively, the K3 is newer and is "the latest and greatest". But the K2 is absolutely no slouch it would appear and also has the significant benefit of maturity on the market. Differences in size and weight and keyboard layout/navigation and display should also be taken into account, but again, only you can be the best judge here. I already threw my 2cents in ![]() I repeat: Ain't MobileRead great? ![]() |

I had a used K1 for a long time. It's not bad having an older device, but you quickly realize what you're missing with the newer features, even if you don't really need them. |

If money is so tight that you would need another month to obtain the necessary $35 difference then perhaps your Sony 350 should be sufficient. There's no major feature that the K3 (or K2) has that the S350 doesn't, except for WiFi, which isn't critical to the reading experience. |

I had a K2 that I gave to my daughter after I purchased a K3. I liked it fine (I also liked the joystick better than the directional buttons on the K3). The only aggravating part was the lack of Wi-Fi. AT&T service is dreadful in my area and I can barely get a signal for the Whispernet.

I can't connect to our corporate WiFi and the Kindle can't connect to AdHoc networks, so I can't sync mine by tethering it to my phone... :-( Why oh why do they prevent connections to ad-hoc networks?
