cbr files

I don't think that's possible. A cbr or cbz file is simply a folder of images that has been compressed with RAR or ZIP, respectively. I don't think either archive format supports that kind of metadata.

Thanks for the reply anyway I've tried calibre but i think its good only for organizing within the calibre program because there is no option to convert cbr/cbz to cbr/cbz. Cbr/cbz does not appear on the drop down menu of available format to convert to. I hope kobo has a way to sort cbr files via author

ooops, just noticed that the document section in Kobo does not have a sort by author only by file name, date added and last read. I must confused it with the books sections. So no use even if my cbr or pdf files have an author in their metadata. Well I just wished kobo would include a dedicated pdf section that can sort title and author just like the book section in their next firmware release.

There is a metadata format. Its use is covered in our wiki but it is not a standard. Perhaps if Kobo adopted it then the standard would emerge. Basically is is a separate file in the cbr or cbz. Of course another choice is just to rename the filename to be reflective of how you want to sort the file.

I started having a look around yesterday after my previous post and there's an alternative that doesn't require altering the archive's contents, you simply add the metadata to the zip comment field.

Interesting idea but the stated need is faulty. It is easy to add a file or even change a file without unzipping an archive. Sigil, for example, is a epub editor that makes all sorts of changes without ever having the user unzip the container. (epub, like cbz, uses zip as a container). 7zip can already work very well with zip files without unzipping them.

However, that does not mean that the comment field could not be used. It is not clear, though, that all implementations support comments and there would still need to be a defined format for the data. For example info zip can only add one line of comment data at a time and cannot change it once it is there. info unzip has no separate option to deal with comments. They just appear on the screen.
