Now, let's be reasonable. Really, do you think that displaying an image is going to affect your battery life? If so, how much, you'll be out one page turn?

Also, the screensaver is there to let you know your reader is on but in sleep mode. It saves new users from repeatedly powering on/powering off and a lot of CS calls about nonresponsive readers.

That last page turn could mean the difference between finishing a book between charges!

Well, there would be 24,999 page turns left.

Sony calls it a standby screen. To set an image as the standyby screen follow the instuctions in "To set as a standby screen" on page 119 of your 950 User Guide.

One benefit of customizable standby screens is that you can create your own and put your name and/or contact information on it in case you misplace it. Not everyone is honest enough to return it if they find it, but they just might.

Yeah, I definitely do that -- in my experience, if you make it easy for people to do the right thing, they usually will.

That really depends on the person. When you're not reading the device goes to sleep. When it goes to sleep it WILL alter the page so it doesn't really matter if you put a blank image, use the default authors or nature, or throw up your own set of images from a folder inside the screensavers folder. Then it does NOTHING.

It is neither useful nor useless, nor does it burn any power once it throws up the one image to indicate sleep and the touch IR is off, but it is nice to have the option.

I personally find it useful as the image I throw up is a bit of text I put in an image that has my contact info and library card number; the first in case I lose it and a samaritan finds it, and the second because I borrow ebooks from the public library and I don't want to carry yet another plastic card in my wallet.

Is there any way to disable the advertising on the home page - the "What To Read Next" on the bottom half of the page?

I like that it goes to a picture rather staying on page I'm reading. Now, it would be nice to have more control over the function without hacking it, but that is a topic for another conversation.

Oh, that is awesome! I wish my Kindle could do that. I would certainly use it when I traveled.

I got mine Friday and I'm loving it, I like unlike my Kindle I can use whatever wallpapers I want, however I have noticed the "Press the N button below to wake up your NOOK" doesn't show up when you use your own.

I guess you can always edit the picture and add that with photoshop or something around those lines, but it would never be same, specially since the "N" is not a regular font that I know of, (I wonder if it's a letter from another language or something) has anyone found a way to make that notice appear while using your own wallpapers?

I suspect that those words are in the default author images themselves, just as you would have to put such wording in your own images if you wanted the words to appear. I could be wrong, of course. As far as the font used for the "n", you could probably find a font that matches it - it would be non-serifed.

I wonder if they'll ever implement the "currently being read book's cover" option for the screensaver. You know - reinforce the idea that you're reading a real book . As I recall, we requested the hell out of that feature for the classic nook over on the B&N fora. No luck .

Yes, that would be nice. But it seems that these readers and epub files already have a lot of trouble with book covers - I mean, I don't always (ever?) see them on sideloaded books. So they probably don't want to deal with that whole can of worms.

I am trying out a beta plugin for calibre that allows me to send book covers from calibre to my reader to act as screen savers.
By the way you can just make a folder in screensavers put all the JPG's and PNG's you want in it and it will load them all. The images don't need to be 800x600 or 4bit to work
