I'd say sell DRM free from your own site.
Most current DRM schemes have been broken, applying one will only serve to: * Increase your costs if you have to license a DRM solution * Put off some customers from buying your books * Limit the range of devices your books can be used on What it won't do is stop people who wish to pirate the book. One person will know enough to remove the DRM and everyone else will just download that version. Point your client to Baen books as an example of a company that is successful selling books with zero DRM in multiple formats. Make the lack of DRM a selling point. But to answer your question, if you must have DRM go with something like Adobe's wrapped around the ePub format. It'll at least give you a wider range of reading devices. Although it has been broken so it's not really going to offer you much protection. |

Guys, if someone asks for something, don't try to sell them on the exact opposite.
You also have to remember from the original post, that the OP is the retailer for books by another party, and the ones who own the books are the ones who want the DRM. Selling the OP on being DRM free won't do a lot of good, considering they're not the ones making the decisions. |

Perhaps the OP's client is unaware of how easy drm is to remove or the probkems it can bring? In fact maybe it needs demonstrating to them, explain the added cost the drm adds both in license fees and managment and then let them decide if they still want it. The client's decision is usually final but there's nothing wrong with providing them with extra information to make sure they're making an informed decision. If the op has already gone over this ground with their client then that's fair enough. At least they can't turn around and say, hey our books are been pirated i thought we were paying for drm x to stop that. My advice in that regard remains. Adobe adept, it appears to be the most widely supported. |

Am I the absolute last person to notice the word "pubish" in the thread title?
![]() No disrespect to the OP at all, but I instantly thought of a CSI investigator; "We found a hair that looks a little pubish, but we won't know for sure until we get it back to the lab." TMI? |

I did not intend to comment in the thread, so I obiously did not comment "pubish" either (before now). It seems that OP has abandoned the thread, though if s/he still reads here; Tell your friend that I will not be buying the book for at least two reasons. 1: DRM (I've stopped buying DRM books from Amazon as well) 2: Ibook (Dont have, and never will have, any apple product) |

PUBLISH!!!!
Yikes ... just saw the "typo". Oops.
I think all of your advice has been really helpful. I have not really used eBooks and have been a diehard print and paper fan but I recently got an iPad and the reading experience of the ePub for me is so nice. There are still things that paper can do that digital can't but digital is a very viable alternative for 90% of the books I read. I especially love hyperlinks. Since I am a new fan I will probably remain on these forums after my project is completed just for my own interest. I really do appreciate your feedback on my original issue and I am going to pass it along to my client. ![]() Last edited by JM Knowles; 06-10-2011 at 02:33 PM. |
