Thanks, transmitthis,
Yes, I went through the first 50 or 60 that way - using my short copy as the benchmark, with no luck.

I'm starting to wonder whether the "long one" (and it only, according to the Windows forums) might not be somewhere else on the disk. After all, if a single file somewhere can cause this type of problem, who's to say that it has to be in the calibre folder?

By "moving" the lot using the Welcome wizard to a different, shorter directory structure, I can now see all the files in WE (I couldn't use WE cut/paste to do that), I've been able to successfully copy / paste the lot using WE to my network server, and hence to the other PC where I wanted to put the library.

My issue now is that I've resolved the SYMPTOMS of the issue, but haven't really addressed the issue itself.

I'm planning on rebuilding my home PC in a couple of weeks time (I've already purchased the new mobo, processor, memory, 2tB hdd for the transplant, and am just allowing some of my demonoid torrents upload their quota before I pull the plug on the current lot, and recreate in a new hardware environment.

Thanks, everybody - I think that there probably isn't much mileage to take this thread much further - it might just be worth remembering is someone else reports a similar issue, but apart from that I think that this is a dead end. If I ever do get to the bottom of it, I'll report back with my findings.
