Take it... be sensible... enjoy it. ![]() I'd take a different position if they still cost $359 like I paid for mine, but frankly, people take things camping all the time that are more fragile and more expensive to replace than a Kindle without thinking twice about it. ![]() |

For E-ink specifically its a fluid with reacts to electric impulses. Electromagnetic actually, as every electric field has a magnetic field associated to it; and every magnetic field has an electric field in presence of a conductor of an electrical field associated to it. That being said, usually metaloid compounds react to temperature. As most devices are designed to work under "standard conditions" and a a range (+/- X) (ie: 1 atm preasure, 25°C); when going off limits, some failures may occur. |

I have taken my K1 car camping and it was just fine. If you have a good cover I think you should be fine. You might want to take a look for a slightly more sturdy cover then others.
Grab some silica packs, put it in a cover, carry it in a ziploc, store it in a water proof stuff sack, and you should be fine. Heck, you could probably leave out the silica pack and ziploc. |

I am part of a men's book club. Old farts drinking and talking about literature. In the summer, we do a "book camp", and the Kindles are in tents and on tree stumps, and dangerously close to beer. This is in September, when the dew is on the grass. No problems yet, at least with the machines.

However, there is camping and then there is camping. If he's asking is it tough enough to withstand submergence when the kayak goes over the waterfall and then a free fall or two while climbing the sheer face of the mesa, then yeah, he's probably better of with a small paperback. But driving up to the lake and reading in the camp chair? Heck, I bring the Kindle AND the guitar. Last edited by ApK; 06-01-2011 at 01:50 PM. |

This does not need to be overly theoretical. Go observe the page refreshes before and after sticking your Kindle in the fridge for an hour. |

I've never taken mine out of the house. I just bought a splash proof case that was on sale so who knows that may change. I'm more concern in losing or having someone steal mine then it getting weather damage though.
I haven't had the cold page turn problem since I upgraded my firmware. I think as long as the screen is protected and the device is protected from moisture you should be fine. |

I'll be taking a paperback (or two) with me,
not my Kindle, when I leave for a wilderness whitewater kayaking/hiking trip in the northern Brooks Range (above Arctic Circle in Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska) in a couple of weeks. While the Kindle would probably be fine I just don't want to have to worry about it. So now I'm stuck finding one or two books that don't weigh much or take up much space -- it's a 2-3 hour flight each way in a two-seater plane and I have to carry everything I need for two weeks in my kayak, so weight and space are limited. I've gotten very spoiled, having multiple books and magazines on my Kindle at any given time, so I can match my mood and reading material. Maybe it will be OK to spend long hours just sitting and observing untouched nature, though! (In 24-hour daylight, of course.)
