Jetbook lite and mini, the way to go.

Supported by the company, solid firmware, replaceable batteries, relatively cheap. Not perfect but how are these not good?

If you are going to spend $99 on a Jetbook mini, which has an LCD screen (not an Eink screen), and you are going to have to replace your batteries, etc, you would be MUCH better off spending $109.99 (at borders.com) on a Sony PRS-350, which is a HUGELY upgraded reader to the Jetbooks.

Agreed. I just went from a Kindle3 to a Sony Reader Pocket edition and I love it. Touch interface is extremely well designed and functional. Design of the whole thing is flawless. Great piece of technology from a company with a long track record and the prices on these are as low as they've ever been. I can't see going with some off-brand generic plastic thing vs. a PRS-350 just to save $20. Especially if you actually try them both first.

Weird nonsense. Replacing your own batteries is a good thing not bad. E-ink is not necessarily better than the non-backlit LCD. Also I would point out that the Borders's price is just the price at Borders and just at the moment, not anywhere else. No SD card on the Sony.

"HUGELY upgraded" -how?

I don't think you can go wrong with the aluratek pro, the Jetbook or the Jetbook Lite as a primary or back up reader. I would rather have any of them, than say a Nook or other major brand (as backup to my Kindle 3). The three I mentioned take SO many formats! Almost all formats! The Jetbook is an awesome reader. (I don't recommend the mini, it is not the same). I had a Jetbook Lite with user replaceable batteries. I decided I wanted a thinner, lighter ebook reader to pop into my purse so I got the Jetbook instead. Absolutely fantastic little reader. Mine was @ $85.00.

I have the Aluratek Libre Pro and really like using it. It is easy to use and the
screen is glare free.

Agreed. Especially about the batteries. After an initial investment of about $20 for 8 AA NiMH batteries and a charger the batteries are essentially free. Recharge one set while using the other and you're always set -- never need to tether your reader to a computer. (With a 400 WATT power supply to charge your reader!)

(And, since they also fit my portable radio, my camera, my audio recorder ... seriously, how is this a drawback?)

PocketBooks, Onyxes, L-Books - nice alternative devices with eInk
JetBook or Aluratec - devices with TFT screens - I thought they would disappear after rise of e-Inks, but they still have their customers, in spite of some technically 'old' display...
