It's hard for me to accept this argument. The media (to make money) has to report on what the public cares about, but they don't have to do it in a moronic way. I also think that the tech media is particularly derelict in their duties to inform people. What other industry has journalists comparing two completely dissimilar products? Would anyone take seriously a car review comparing an Escalade to a Porsche 911? And yet, these are the kinds of idiotic comparisons people put up with in tech journalism.

It is a stupid comparison. I don't even read novels on my ipad, I read them on my original nook 3g. E-ink is very misunderstood. I think older people in particular think of it as "color TV" vs. "Black and White TV." Black and White must be inferior, right?

Isn't this thread kind of tilting at windmills? The only place I've seen this comparison made was in the headline of the blog...wait for it..."cultofmac.com." The ensuing post didn't even back up the "wants to be black and white iPad" claim, but just gave a rather flattering review of the Nook Touch. The headline was little more than an attention-grabbing excuse to review the device on a Mac blog.

I'm an older person and the ever dwindling crowd I hang out with don't feel that way at all. There was no TV when we were growing up. We did watch the transition of B&W to color movies. I remember thinking at the time that it was a shame that movie makers were relying on the novelty of color to fill the theaters, neglecting plot and acting skills.

I think the older set would say that the most important attribute of an ereader is not black and white vs color but contrast. Its the eyes you see. They are as old as the rest of me!

In poor light I read with a tablet (in black and white.) In good light and outdoors I use my K3. Come to think of it most of my hardcover books are in black and white. So no, I don't think the older folks think of black and white as inferior.

Regards - John

P.S. I've pre-ordered one of the new Nooks.

Sorry, I didn't mean to overgeneralize

I should say that the older people that I know that do not understand technology (can barely turn on a computer) have expressed that to me. For example, I had a nook color, and still have a nook classic, and a Pandigital novel. My mom, aunt, and others couldn't understand that they were different, and that the nook color and especially the Pandigital Novel weren't necessarily better. They would say "but that one is only black and white." I actually think that the nook classic blows away the Pandigital Novel...

I agree I have seen very few articles comparing the iPad to the Nook Touch.

I haven't even seen a link to an article in this thread.

I have an iPad, sold my 950, waiting for the Nook Touch. So currently the iPad is my main reader and it is actually fairly nice for reading in bed at night. But I wouldn't compare the everyday reading on it to my old 950 or the Nook Touch once I have that.

Didn't think a link to the reference was required. I read something, that particular reference stuck in my mind. Later when I returned to this forum I shared what I read. Just something I read while clicking through content. Certainly wasn't worthy of bookmarking for later retrieval.

Well, again, I suspect what you saw was the deliberately sensational headline on the blog I mentioned, which took googling "Nook touch ipad" (i.e. asking for trouble) to find, didn't turn up any similar results, and like the majority of headlines anywhere ever did not much reflect the content of the article.

As a result, the majority of discussion in this thread has been fantasy RP, criticizing an internet that does not actually exist.

Which entertains me.

Carry on.

This is why the internet was born: So that we can look up specific information from sources who know what they're talking about rather than relying on the "general media."
