There cannot be a black and white mode that is different from the color mode. Color is accomplished by hardware filters over the pixels. It is not possible to remove those filters with software. It you read the wiki and follow the links to the e-Ink device web site you will see from the description that there cannot be two modes. However it is possible to use subpixels to perform anti-aliasing on text. This mode depends on fooling the eye that a very small colored pixel with look gray to the user's eye. The eye cannot detect color in really small images.

Subpixels on text is supported by the controller. you can read about the controller on our wiki as well. It would work with text even if there were a color image also on the page. However, this may not account for the images you see on the web site. These may be doctored or concept images, not real pictures.

Just hope that the first user receiving and reviewing one also has a Kindle DX to compare it to!

The only thing that scares me little is when those large screen ebook readers get torqued; for the glass substrate! They have quite small borders, and torquing is probably a large reader's weakness!

As far as resolution, it's still finer than a regular 800x600 pix e-ink screen.
Most pdf's are readable, though not comfortably, on 6" e-ink screens (one can actually read the letters if one tries hard).
This newer screen not only has an increase in resolution, but also has a larger page, meaning small letters will appear larger.

With these 2 benefits over regular E-ink it might be just enough to read most PDF's for people with good eyes.
One feat missed on nearly all PDF reader programs, is to zoom to a level that gets rid of the white margins (no reflow, just zoom to text). If that was possible, many pdf's would be much more comfortable to read on current e-ink devices.

And since I was uncomfortable reading most pdf's on a 6" screen, but only marginally, I guess the Jetbook Color will be one just crossing that margin enough for one like me.
I would understand that many would prefer a higher resolution and/or bigger screen.

It would be nice when the jetbook color allows text to be fattened (like made bolder)!
In that case very small text might become even more readable!

IIRC the regular jetBook fbreader PDF software does this. (mine is dead so I can't double check.) I found their PDF support on the 6" screen to be excellent with zoom, reflow, area zooming, columns, fit to width, etc.

It's a 5" screen (3"x4") and the Adobe Reader Mobile 9.1.1 provides the
.pdf reflow and the rest. It makes reading .pdf files doable but not really
very enjoyable, unless it is a text based .pdf.
