Wow. I'll never get around to reading most of those, but I feel I must have them.
Does anyone know if any of those renditions are nicer/cleaner/prettier than another?

I would bet a week's wages that if it's on Mobileread it's going to be nicer/cleaner/prettier than anywhere else

Go with mobi on MobileRead. These are done very nicely.

Bartleby is online only, while some of the Internet Archive and Project Gutenberg versions are scans.

Ooooh, Pilgrim's Progress. Been wanting to read that one again, now that I'm All Growed Up.

Thanks for the link.

(CONTROVERSIAL OPINION TIME: I love Wells, but I can't stand Verne. I liked the abridged stuff as a child, but I recently just read Journey to the Center of the Earth unabridged and it was AWFUL. I am the only one who thinks so? I couldn't stand all the author asides about NO REALLY THIS IS TOTALLY SCIENTIFIC and I nearly choked when they packed 2 months worth of food and 2 days worth of water on the assumption that they'd "find more water". Now that I'm a grown-up, that stuff really stands out at me, I'm afraid.)

Tempting, but I think I'll go with the free ebooks. Thanks again. I think these should give me a nice start. Perhaps I'll do an "every other book" type thing.

Probably not the best forum in which to admit this, but for both Wells and Verne stories, I prefer the movies...

With the possible exception of 'The Time Machine'...

...although 'Time After Time' was probably my favorite thing involving Wells and a time machine....

The analects of Confucius
The Art of War

US P.D. in the original German - Ostwald Spengler, The Decline of the West (both volumes) but the English translation is not.

Not e-book and not PD - but highly recommended - The Rational Individual, John Davidson and Lord Rees-Moog

The Mysterious Stranger - Mark Twain.

Yes, that is truly a sad and pathetic looking little monkey.
I'll have to use that on the cover of "I'm sorry" cards.
