But if you hand me a sheet of paper with math problems with no context, I flounder badly.
i can understand the no context thing. i'm the type of person who needs reasoning and to understand each step fully before really being able to do it by myself i only hope i can learn to be as adept at business math too *sigh*

You might have a point. I started out in regular High School but ended up going to Blackhawk Tech for my High School Equivalency Diploma to finish my studies (there were a lot of jerks in my high school & the principal let them have free reign) and the maths teacher through Blackhawk Tech was a retired teacher who did a far better job explaining Algebra than the regular teacher did. Partly because he didn't have as many students I think.

I understand where CWatkinsNash is coming from too. It's like hearing only a few words of a conversation. You might get the gist of what is being discussed, but it's more likely that you will misunderstand the topic. There is an old Disney movie with Tommy Kirk that illustrates that concept.
Spoiler:
His character (Merlin Jones) is doing an experiment and something goes wrong. Next thing he knows he's able to read minds. He reads the mind of a local judge, judge Holmsbie (played by Leon Ames) and becomes convinced the man is planning to commit a jewel theft. It turns out in the end that the judge lives a double life. In his private time (away from the bench) he's a writer of detective novels and he was just working out the plot of his newest project when Merlin Jones (Tommy Kirk) read his thoughts. lol.
