It's like having a whole new phone to play with. Minus the buyer's remorse. I donated to the xdandroid project after installing it, but I don't regret that at all because I got so much bang for my buck.

Made a few changes.

I updated to a newer kernel, trying to get usb working, but apparently it's still not there yet.

I overclocked to 710 Mhz, seems stable and a bit faster, not sure if it's worth it or not.

This post explains how to add some additional codecs. Now I can play all the movies and videos I already have, but I still have problems with some HQ YouTube vids.

David, have you looked at CyanongenMod? What do you think of it?

I haven't tried this yet, but I read it worked. For USB (thanks ryan):

Windows: Install DroidExplorer this lets you open a terminal (like command prompt) on the phone, lets you browse device adding/deleting files, among other features that are very useful. If that DroidExplorer doesn't pick up your phone (when picked up it will be called 0000000000) install PDAnet on your phone and pc. PDAnet provides the drivers needed to connect the phone. It also lets you use your phone as a modem and you can send SMSs using your computer. Do NOT run PDANET at the same time as DroidExplorer. When PDANET is connected it WILL use your phone for data connections - this is the only warning. The phone is not used for any networking when DroidExplorer is connected.

As to cyanogenmod, I've always read good things about it. Very recently there was a news item that some version would allow selective permissions grants so when a program asked for the moon, your only choice isn't to not install it. I bet that will get a lot of people in trouble, but if you know what you're doing, it sounds awesome.

As to using it vs. xdandroid on a TP2, I couldn't say. Last I looked at the xda threads, it looks like there might be more broken in both cm6 and cm7, but I'm not up-to-date. If you try it or research it, please do share. I'd love to know more.

For the video codecs, you'll also need the file from this post to follow those instructions. My bet is that will get baked into a later official build though. I gather FRX07 is on the horizon.

Thanks for the link. I'm downloading DroidExplorer now. I was hoping to get Google's AppInventor working, but it seems to require a direct USB connection to the phone. I did lots of fiddling, and trying this and that, and got to the point where "adb devices" reported back 0000000000, but AppInventor still wouldn't work.

I need to check if there's a option that will let you build your app and manually install the APK on the phone yourself.

It was interesting, as I was doing things last night I realized that the phone portion had turned on, and calling and receiving phone calls worked. I didn't think that would without pulling the SIM card. I'm not sure what kicked it on, but it works sometimes.

hi great post, i have done everything from your tutorial on my htc diamond and all works very fast and fine but i have big problem with touchscreen it`s seems to be upside down (the display orientation is ok but when i tap screen on right top corner it`s work like i`am taping down right corner) any help? (sorry for my english)

Hmm, I suppose the tscalibration file I posted might be for the Touch Pro2 only. I'll look for a diamond version. Just to check, are you sure you moved the correct startup.txt file in step 4?

I saw your thread on xda, is the connection up to AI's demands now? I'm not sure what I'd do with it, but it looks interesting enough to play around with.

Yep, it's all working now. App Inventor doesn't have any problem talking to the phone. The phone can run apps, and you can package APKs for XDAndroid just like any other phone.

umm after i followed the steps it appears to be installed correctly but when i unlock the screen it restarts my phone and gets back into windows...what should i do to resolve this?

I'd probably try a different kernel (see step 7). Which one are you using now?

The ones near the top of the other step 7 link are the most recent. Look for recent kernels with lots of positive votes. You can also expand the comments and look for other diamond 500 users expressing positive opinions.

Since you and I have different phones, another kernel may work better for you than the may 6th one does. Welcome to Mobileread.

On your phone? Couldn't say. On your PC you can use 7zip, as linked at the top of the guide.
