I actually agree with the gist of everything you've said here in this paragraph, but it's so negative that it's really distracting from your overall point, I think. And I'm the LAST person to be labeled a B&N cheerleader - I've waded in there with you before in the "800 Reasons Why The Stock Reader Sucks" arguments. ![]() If you went with a phrasing more like this: Quote:

I don't like the kindle at all but I'm not popping into the Kindle board and telling them how much of a POS their device is. but when a person comes on here daily to tell us what POS the nook color is and the new nook from BN will be a failed loser too. I'm not understanding why he is surprised he's labeled as such? Last edited by boswd; 05-23-2011 at 03:03 PM. |

I agree that if jswinden would tone down his rhetoric, people might stop thinking he is a troll. If you write like a troll (e.g. calling things "garbage"), people will think you are. Although such writing is very common in web forums, it is somewhat juvenile, IMHO.

I'm brutally honest and objective. If you had ever been around true academic scholarship you would understand my style. But the truth is a lot of the forum members are either Android cult members or Apple cult members who are way too closeminded to listen to an alternative opinion. You come to these forums to find likeminded folks who will uphold your preconceived beliefs and turn mean when your opinions are challenged. I've been repeatedly called a troll by both Android and Apple cults, even though i've owned, and still own, devices connected to both.

...................aaaand, I think we've exhausted this thread's potential for meaningful discussion. That's a shame.

From which came the initial post's "Hmmm... What about this newfangled Android stuff? Is it any good? AHA! I can check it out for cheap with a Nook Color! (Note the clever rationaiization for buying a new toy?)" The words 'cheap' and 'toy' should have been a clue, but no--let's get all angsty and rude and hijack a thread for soapboxes. If this is the quality of discourse on the Nook forum, I'll go back to the jetBook threads. They're slow moving, but much more polite. Regardlessly, Jack Tingle [1] I'll see any OS you might offer and raise you the magnetic card programming on the Olivetti-Underwood Programmo 101. Most OSes work tolerably well. FYI, I still think late-mark VAX systems had the best overall balance for pure utility. They just weren't as pretty as the NC. |

overall the rhetoric here on the nook board, is very pleasant and helpful and polite. But we do have a few who feel the need to jump in every thread and bash everything nook. I know of two posters specifically who do nothing but troll on the nook. but overall most people on here are very helpful. You know what they say about a "few bad apples"? I sorry I couldn't help myself. ![]() Last edited by boswd; 05-24-2011 at 10:00 AM. |

I get that you were being tongue-in-cheek, and that's fine, but it was hard to parse your tone to understand what the point of your OP was and what kind of responses you expected. Heck, I'm still not sure I know what responses you wanted. If the point of your post was Nook Color. Nice. Happy with my purchase. then I and most of the rest of the B&N board are happy to congratulate you on your purchase. Yay! If the point of your post was Nook Color. Nice. Happy with my purchase. Now I can sign a 2 year contract for one of those newfangled Android phones. then you shouldn't be too surprised to have the entire board go Wait. What. in varying degrees of urgency. I think if you'd left out the first paragraph in your OP, this thread might have been clearer for everyone. In retrospect, I think I realize that your first paragraph was a framing device for your review, but at the time, it seemed like you were using your impressions of the NC to decide whether or not to buy an Android phone contract. And no matter how much you do or don't like your NC, you most definitely should not do that, because the NC experience and the Android smartphone experience are nothing alike, imho. Still, I'm sorry your thread was derailed. You can use the ![]() ![]() |

Using emotional descriptors like 'garbage' is not 'objective'. It's about as subjective as you can get. Again, BS. |

I'll chime in and say that I like Jack's rough "exterior". I've followed his posts since I joined the forum and I recognize that's how he expresses his sentiments. I don't find it rude, it often brings a snicker or chuckle out of me. I don't believe his lack of social "niceties" should be viewed as a negative. He's being him. I'm willing to accept him for that. I'll also add that I have thick skin so maybe it just doesn't rub me the wrong way. If others don't like it, I respect that.

![]() Also, it's important to note that the person didn't say, "I'm a gruff teddy bear, deal with it", but rather something like, "if you had spent any time around academia, you'd be used to this", and that's (a) not true, and (b) implies that the people in question are unschooled (and therefore supposedly ignorant). ![]() That's not something most people are going to appreciate, regardless of how much they don't mind gruff teddy bears. ![]() |
