I've never done the ebook and audiobook of the same one. The closest I have come is with Meg Cabot's 'Airhead' series. The library had the second and third books in audio format, so I started listening to the second one in my car. I liked it so much I ordered the first one for my Kindle. So I was reading the first one at the same time as listening to the second one, which felt sort of bizarre.

Bill Bryson has been recommended to me several times, so I may give his books a try. His books look like they would be good for a long car ride, so I may give them a shot later this summer, if more WW1 books don't show up on audible. My wife would be soooo happy with that. ![]() |

While we're comparing audiobook readers, I really liked the guy who did the Millennium Trilogy ("The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo") series.
I couldn't get into the book on my first attempt but really wanted to... ordered the audio book and followed along, and he made all the difference in the world. Yay for that guy! |

I hated hated HATED the long winding seemed-to-go-nowhere "boat conversation" at the beginning of TGWTDT and I was like, oh, no way can I stick with this. The audio book guy really flies through that part and before you know if, you've gotten to the interesting stuff. ![]() I think they have the audiobook at the Free Library of Philadelphia, if you have a subscription. ![]() |

Anamardoll, did you do the abridged or unabridged version? They have different readers.

Cool. I had Audible credits and that's the one I got.

I'm about half way through The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo. It's so nice to know how these names are actually pronounced.

My local library just this month added the epub/pdf formats to their digital section. Prior to that, all that was available from the e-library were downloadable audiobooks and that's how I started with them. Slow going at first, but concentration got better over time. Now I try to check out both and sometimes read along while listening. That generally only lasts a short time as I tend to read faster than the narrator narrates.
I agree that the narrator is key and a bad one can ruin a book. I'm probably being too picky, but it annoys me a bit when a male narrator mimics or immitates a female character's dialogue. It sometimes doesn't ring true...and sometimes will distract me from the plot since I find myself dwelling on it. |
