I suspect he did it because people in some forums will flip out on you if you dare post a new thread on a topic that has at any time in the ten-year life of the forum, been mentioned in any other thread, ever, even off-topic. People who use those forums get trained to necropost.

Waterstones UK wouldn't help other than to send the machine for repair to Sony. Unfortunately, it was the wife who took the machine back, as I was at work, and she let Waterstones fob her off with a repair. Luckily, Sony repaired the unit FoC.

Although the machine had not had any direct knocks, I believe that the chassis may have twisted whilst it was in my pocket (possibly due to the seatbelt tension?) putting stress onto the screen, and fracturing the substrate. Due to the readers being thin, they are easy to flex slightly out of true. These devices, although portable, are not really rugged enough just yet - a thicker, heavier device would likely be more robust (but less desirable).
I keep telling people that an eink reader in your pocket is a bad idea because you risk breaking it. It just isn't safe and a 6" reader that doesn't lend itself to fit in your pocket is much better to have.

One person on this board broke 2 (in his cargo pants) readers and complained loudly in this forum about the poor screen quality before he realized how they were breaking. I believe he also got them replaced.

Knowing my own weakness I put my PRS-505 in a Book-Armor on day 1 and haven't removed it since.

Kudos to Sony for sending you a replacement. I'm glad it work out for the best.

sorry to hear about all your guys problems with the screen breaking but i've owned a prs-505 for over a year now and the unit has been droped several time and no damage to the screen yet, my wife carries her 505 in her backpack and her handbag all the time and has no problem. Maybe we are just lucky
