USB / HTML is not a word, you say U-S-B or H-T-M-L, not like swat where you say swat like swat a fly, but still people say USB / HTML is an acronym. I guess general use is wrong.

That sounds like an oximoron. I mean the way we use many words today would have been considered "wrong" a few centuries ago; The precise understanding of a word can evolve overtime. So arguably the only difference between right and wrong is how widely the usage is accepted.

There's also politics meddling in liguistics and trying to change the vocabulary and grammar from the top down for political reasons, declaring widely used words or grammar forms "undesirable" over night.

Yes, that was his point to me when he scolded me for my egregious error on a homework assignment. So, yes, USB and HTML are not acronyms in that sense of the word. Of course, many people (Americans as well) think "there" and "they're" and "their" are the same in general use as well (just a tiny sampling, there are many, many more examples, like then and than, etc), but I still think they're wrong. I was also taught in home ec that what I thought was a spatula was actually a turner (points taken away for using the wrong term!).

You can call it whatever you want, I was just adding on a tidbit I did not know before the professor drilled it into me. I thought it was interesting, and, as I've learned many a thing on this forum, I thought I'd share it.

I think you were mistaken, you probably didn't see alien #1 and only saw alien #2, because image #1 was removed by a moderator for being too big, but now I've replaced it with a smaller image so it should be allright.

Oh, ok. Ok, well, I *am* Alien #2, so I'd like to try something different for a while.

Well, it seems you were right, the whole post with the pics mysteriously vanished without even a PM from the moderator. I optimisticly thought it would be tolerated if the pics weren't "indecent". Oh well it was kind of offtopic anyway (not that this thread has a topic really ). It's just bad the post included some responses to previous posts which are now also gone... My ever-so-wise words gone into the wind...
